CABLE COMPANY DIGITAL TRANSITION

Yesterday October 28th 2014 was the full digital transition for the Charter cable company servicing much of Western Colorado.  This change will affect every Charter cable customer in some way.  Here is what you need to know:
  • The cable company IS NOT trying to hurt you & just get more money from their customers.  They are just abiding by the government mandatory digital transition that has been happening for the last several years.  Most of the country has already made this change & we are one of the last areas to be affected.
  • The premium cable box channels have changed so you may have to find your favorite shows on a different channel.  Please note the HD channels are in the "Hundreds" so we recommend you tune to them.  A list of the new lineup can be found HERE.
  • ALL basic cable TVs will not function without a digital cable box of some kind.  The promotions are changing weekly but you should be able to get 1 or 2 of these boxes for free for the first year.  In many cases, especially for wall hung TVs, there will not be space to place these large boxes.  For recommendations on how to resolve that challenge please see below.
  • TIVO customers will need to change their channel list manually by changing the cable provider from the "Charter Communications Legacy" to the current "Charter Communications" list.  Instructions on how to do this can be found HERE.
  • For more creative solutions to help smoothly get your cable working & the physical installation looking good please see below.

Where to put the box?!
One of the largest challenges we see for our customers is where to put the cable box in small areas or where the TV is cleanly hung on the wall.  Wires draped over the wall & cable box sitting on a stool will probably not be acceptable.

There are several good solutions to this ugly option.
  • We carry the actual TIVO brand cable boxes that are amazing!  They have a great system with small boxes called Mini's that can fit behind most TVs.  You only have to have one main "Roamio" TIVO box placed anywhere in the house & then these "Minis" can cleanly be hidden.  They even have a remote option so your remote will work when you don't have line of sight to point at the box.

  • Move the cable box into a closet or somewhere else out of the way.  We are experts at hiding boxes, retro-fitting wire in the wall & keeping the remote still working to make things disappear:)
  • Mount the cable box behind the TV.  This option is not ideal because your TV will probably have to be extended away from the wall some but is possible & we help people with this often.
  •
  • The final solution is not approved by Charter yet but we are working with them to release the DTA (Digital Transport Adapter) style of simple digital cable box.  These are tiny cable company boxes than can go on or behind a TV & provide the basic 1-100 channels you were used to having in simple locations.  Currently they are only being used in commercial applications like hotels & health care facilities.
