Deeper Dive

Residents' Rights

Each issue will highlight a different Residents' Right.

See below for a Deeper Dive into Residents' Right #15 for Adult Care Homes!

15) To have the freedom to participate by choice in accessible community activities and social, political, medical, and religious resources, and to have the freedom to refuse such participation.

  • As a general rule, residents have the same freedom of choice as other people in the community. Their basic freedoms are not legally limited or restricted in any way simply because they reside in care facilities.

Examples of these freedoms include:

  • Residents have the right to choose their physician.

  • Residents have the right to be free of interference, coercion, discrimination, and reprisal from the facility management in exercising his or her rights.

  • Residents have the right to vote, with arrangements made by the facility.
