The CAC of Suffolk County supports the health and wellbeing of the children and families of Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. Each month we'll share highlights and updates to help you better understand how you are part of the healing and justice we see every day.

The violence happening in our country is terrifying, traumatizing, and wrong. It is hurting children, families, and our communities near and far and it is antithetical to our mission and to the values that guide our daily work supporting children’s healing.

The CAC remains steadfast in our commitment to our values and will continue to stand with children and families in healing. We will continue to work towards hope, resilience, and healing.

Talking to Youth

The world can feel big and a little overwhelming sometimes.

Young people notice more than we think. Whether it’s something they saw, heard, or simply felt, big moments can spark big questions — and that’s okay.

You can find our list of simple, supportive ways for caregivers to create space, build trust, and help young people feel safe sharing what’s on their minds in detail here and summarized below:

  • Check in with yourself first
  • Check in with them
  • Make space for questions
  • Help to express big feelings
  • Perfection is not the goal
  • Focus on emotional safety and balance exposure

Some helpful phrases to try:

  • “I’m glad you talked to me about this.”
  • “It’s okay to feel ___”
  • “You’re not alone in feeling that way.”
  • “I can see how you would feel that way. Can you tell me more?”

The bottom line: You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to be open, present, and ready to listen.

Upcoming Events

Join us in the Senate Reading Room at the Massachusetts State House on Tuesday, April 7 for an inspirational event honoring the strength of survivors of child abuse and exploitation. Together we will recognize and lift up the healing journey of survivors and show up as a community to give a voice to those who cannot yet speak.

Recent Highlight

Over the last several years, the CAC's Chief Program Officer, Beth Bouchard and Support to End Exploitation Now (SEEN) Program Manager, Sheelah Gobar have served as members on the Human Trafficking Subcommittee of the Governor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, and Human Trafficking (GCSADVHT).

This collective work on the GCSADVHT culminated in the release of its Five-Year Statewide Plan to Address Sex Trafficking in late January.

Created through the collaborative efforts of the Sex Trafficking Branch of the Human Trafficking Subcommittee (HTS) of GCSADVHT, the plan offers a roadmap for Massachusetts with actionable steps to prevent sex trafficking across the state, to improve the lives of survivors, and to hold exploiters and buyers accountable.

You can read the full plan here.

Beth is a compassionate and thoughtful colleague and leader who is well-regarded across the Commonwealth and the country in the field of child trafficking advocacy and intervention. We are so grateful to have her on our team!

Community Connections

Members of the Support to End Exploitation Now and leadership teams joined advocates and legal experts at the Rappaport Center for Law and Public Policy for a powerful conversation on combating human trafficking. CAC Board Member and Rappaport Center Executive Director Amanda Teo opened the discussion.

This is what advancing safety, justice, and healing looks like.
