CAC Joins "Shifting the Screen" Roundtable
This past Tuesday, May 5th, the Cinema Arts Centre was pleased to have joined the New York Institute of Technology for Shifting the Screen: Independent Cinema in Quarantine , its sixth and final edition of its Dean's Digital Cafe, an online series of virtual roundtables organized by Dean Quigley of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dean of Student Life Tiffani Blake.

The conversation featured CAC Co-Director Dylan Skolnick, Associate Director Cat Kim, and Director of Marketing and Communication Nate Close, and was stewarded by Professor Andre Doughty. A Cinema regular, Professor Doughty had previously presided over our repertory screening of Putney Swope (1969) for Art House Theater Day last September. In addition to Professor Doughty, participants included several familiar faces and appreciative cinema friends, such as Associate Dean Elizabeth Donaldson, and Professor Larry Jaffee.

The main theme for discussion was the impact of social distancing on the the Cinema Arts Centre and our pivot towards online engagement. Topics ranged from the literal translation of programming, from the physical theater space to virtual screens, its growing pains, our continued focus on community partnership, what we look forward to in the future, and everything in-between. While it is abundantly clear that the ramifications of COVID-19 have impacted nearly everything, it has also left room for opportunities. We are a community of ingenuity with a strong will to connect and have conversation with audiences. The Cinema Arts Centre thanks NYIT and Professor Doughty for the virtual coffee and looks forward to future partnership and collaboration!

Thanks to everyone who has supported the CAC during this time.
While the governor has begun to share plans for re-opening New York, we know that venues like the Cinema Arts Centre will be part of the last phase of re-openings and our timeline remains unclear. We continue to operate with a greatly reduced budget, covering essential costs, while continuing to serve our community through remote platforms. We are working hard to make sure that we can implement a reopening that is safe and smooth, once it is appropriate to do so.

During our temporary closure, many members of our community have supported us in a variety of meaningful ways and we are so grateful! While we are providing some online and streaming programming for free, we are also offering paid programs that support the Cinema. Thanks to all who have "attended" our streaming programs.

Many members and patrons have purchased gift cards, another deeply appreciated investment in our future.

We have received many generous financial gifts from our members - from $5 to $10,000, every single gift is powerful and has made a significant impact on our ability to continue to deliver our mission. Thank you so much!

Importantly, this is the time of year that we traditionally hold our Spring Membership Sale. The success of the sale is absolutely vital. Having the Spring Membership Sale while we are closed is a major challenge. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to each person who has decided to become a member, renew their membership, or upgrade their membership during our sale. We will add a day to each expiration date for every day we were closed once we reopen.

Recently, a long-time member wrote to us about what membership means to her, and we are so honored to share those words:

"Cinemas are the heart of our historical and social collective memory. The arts represent our thoughts on many issues and concerns. To no longer have film demonstrating the mindset of humanity, at a given point in time, is a tragic loss. Membership matters."

-Barbara Tutino, Educator

Barbara's membership, and yours, will help to ensure that we will always be here to present independent film programs and cultural events and serve as a community center that cultivates consciousness and compassion - for now through remote tools - but one day again in our theaters and in our Sky Room Cafe.

Thank you!
Two More Weeks to Enter Our Poster Contest!
It's been so much fun seeing the entries to our poster contest. Cinema community members Joseph and Kelly shared the contest online as a good distance learning activity for kids. The entry below was assembled by their children, Julia and Kaitlyn. Great job kids!
