As We Celebrate the Holidays, Remember what you do, Really Matters
|
|
On New Years Eve 2021, 13 people died in DUI/DUID crashes on California roadways, a number 4 times higher than 2020. As we enter the holiday season, there are 1,159 California families with an empty seat at the table as the result of the actions of an impaired driver. Ironically, the days around a major holiday, when many impaired drivers hit the road, such as Thanksgiving (and Black Friday) as well as New Years, are considered particularly dangerous.

Comparing SUD Counselor Training Requirements Across All States
|
DPH-SAPC analyzed the SUD counselor training requirements in all 50 States to get a sense of how CA’s SUD counselor training requirements compares with states across the US in order to inform efforts to shape State policy and approaches to address the needs of this essential workforce.
Key takeaways:
-
Aside from 3 states where the minimum requirement is essentially a high school diploma or GED (Maine, South Dakota, & Washington), CA's 9.5 hour minimum for registered SUD counselors is the lowest across the country.
-
50% (25) of states do not even offer a registered SUD counselor category, meaning that their lowest level of SUD counselor is certified, which typically require at least 300 hours of training, plus clinical practicum hours.
-
60% (30) of states offer a licensed SUD counselor category. This is another area where CA is behind in terms of the SUD workforce.
