Feature Articles
June is National LBGTQ+ Month
Throughout June, Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall riots in Manhattan in 1969 and rallies support for the LGBTQIA community. Communities across the country hold parades, workshops, celebrations, and concerts. Marches for civil rights and awareness take place.

While this month is a time for remembering those who paved the way for the LGBTQA community and who continue to do so, it's also a time to look at how this community is affected by substance abuse.

Several surveys indicate a clear link between people who identify as LGBTQ+ and increased substance misuse risk.

People in the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to experience social stigma, discrimination, rejection, abuse and ostracism from society and even their families. People who identify as anything but heterosexual often face more challenges in their life, in addition to daily stressors, and as a result are at a higher risk of developing mental health and substance use disorders. Read on for an excellent, medically reviewed article, 'LGBTQ+ Drug and Alcohol Treatment Resources' by Megan Hull, The Recovery Village.
June is PTSD Awareness Month
National PTSD Awareness Month is observed annually in June. The month is dedicated to raising awareness about the condition and how to access treatment. June 27th is also National PTSD Awareness Day

According to the National Center for PTSD, between 7 and 8 percent of the population will experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during their lifetime.

Men, women, and children can experience PTSD as a result of trauma in their lives. Events due to combat, accidents, disasters, and abuse are just a few of the causes of PSTD. No matter the reason, PTSD is treatable, but not everyone seeks treatment. There are resources available to help diagnosis PTSD and get help. There is no shame in seeking assistance.
National PTSD Awareness Month is a campaign supported by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. Use #PTSDAwarenessMonth to share support, resources, and follow on social media.

Did you know?
The Summer Solstice
The term solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning 'the Sun stands still.' This is because, on this day, the Sun reaches its southernmost position as seen from the Earth. The Sun seems to stand still at the Tropic of Capricorn and then reverses its direction.

On this day, the Sun rises farthest left on the horizon and sets at its rightmost possible spot. Sunlight strikes places in your home that get illuminated at no other time! It's also the longest day of the year. And who doesn't love a little extra daylight? Enjoy your Summer Solstice, and the Summer season!
