Language access is a primary issue for California museums. At The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, we reflect upon research and tools for Spanish language access, specifically in our school partnership program, Contemporary Art Start (CAS). Our goals are to create a shared language for our diverse population of students to engage in collective meaning-making, to empower individuals with self-awareness and individual agency, and to build community rooted in democratic conversations.
Contemporary Art Start is a yearlong classroom partnership program, where teachers come for up to 35 hours of supportive PD where they learn how to lead inclusive conversations about increasingly complex works of art. Students come to MOCA for two guided, discussion-based museum tours during the year. We offer these tours in English, Spanish, and bilingual Spanish-English to accommodate as many students as possible. For years, we have been working closely with staff to develop strategies that make all students feel comfortable, welcome, and expressive when they come to MOCA. We have presented nationally on this topic as we continually hone our efforts to make education more inclusive, accessible, and learner-centered.

Administrator “Ask Letter” For CAEA Membership
As Art Educators, we are no strangers to advocacy.
We so often have to advocate for the importance of what we do, the resources we need for our classrooms, and for our own professional development.
CAEA is here to help build your advocacy toolbox: and this includes making it as easy as possible for you to request financial support from administrators for membership costs to join your state and national professional organization. Remember: a personal request from educators is always more powerful than a mass email from our organization.
Click here for a customized letter that you can personalize in an email to your school administrator. You can use this to renew your own current membership or to help an art educator you know who is not a current member become one.
