Advancing CA Adult Education Model Program

Castro Valley Adult & Career Education piloted a fully online citizenship class to make it more accessible and convenient to a larger segment of the community.

Given the success of the online model, Castro Valley decided to pilot a fully online Citizenship Preparation class beginning in November, 2021. The class met one evening a week for three hours on Zoom. The class met for twelve weeks, providing 36 hours of synchronous instruction. Students came to campus twice: one time to take the CASAS reading test as a pre-test and a second time to take CASAS reading as a post-test, as well as both the Government and History test and the Citizenship Interview test. They were able to enroll 25 students in this pilot online class, which clearly indicated that the online model was easily accessible for students.

March 14, 2024 12:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m.

Educational Technology and Universal Design for Learning are natural complements. Used together, they create equitable and accessible instruction for a variety of learners. UDL is a framework designed around leveling curriculum so that all students have an opportunity to learn. Using technology tools to enhance engagement and representation helps build an equitable platform for learning. Participants will walk away with practical strategies for implementing these ideas in their classroom.
