PPIC Releases Briefs on
Immigrants in California
Over the last several months, the Public Policy Institute of California has released a number of research articles about immigrants in California, providing detailed information about who our immigrant population is, and the impact our California immigrants have on education, the workforce, and communities as a whole. Over the next year, adult education consortia in California are tasked with evaluating the educational needs of adults in their region and conducting a review of data on their region's adult population through the Three-Year Plan development process. PPIC research briefs may be one tool to evaluate your consortium needs.
Current research provides the following:
1. Immigrant Population Size: California is home to 10.4 million immigrants, comprising 27% of its population and 23% of the total foreign-born population in the US.
2. Demographic Impact: Nearly half of California children (46%) have at least one immigrant parent, and 34% of prime-working-age adults (25-54 years) are foreign-born.
3. Stabilization of Immigration: California's immigrant population growth has slowed compared to previous decades, with recent data showing a modest increase in immigration after a period of decline during the pandemic.
4. Legal Status: A majority (54%) of immigrants in California are naturalized US citizens, while the undocumented immigrant population has decreased significantly from 28% in 2007 to 18% in 2021.
5. Origin and Distribution: Immigrants in California are primarily from Latin America (49%) and Asia (40%), with significant concentrations in coastal metropolitan areas such as Santa Clara, San Francisco, and Los Angeles counties.
