Adult Education to Community College Transitions

Consortia Involved: South Bay Adult Education Consortium (Southwestern)

The Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD) and Southwestern College (SWC) have partnered to make the transition from adult school to community college easier through their "Fast Forward to College" initiative. By placing SWC counselors at four adult schools and embedding noncredit college courses into adult school programs, the partnership is removing barriers and creating clear pathways to higher education. Since May 2024, 82 adult school students have met with an SWC counselor, SB 554 enrollment has grown from 4 students in Fall 2022 to 28 in Spring 2025, and over 400 students have visited SWC campuses.

Learn more about the Adult Education to Community College Transitions model program and visit the Advancing California Adult Education website to view other Model Programs throughout California.

Adult Dual Enrollment Research Project

Statewide Research Initiative

Launching Fall 2026

CAEP TAP at NOCE is pleased to announce the launch of the Adult Dual Enrollment Research Project which will take place during this 2026-2027 academic year.

The purpose of this action research project is to build a statewide understanding of

Adult Dual Enrollment (ADE) implementation across California and identify strategies

to support equitable expansion, stronger partnerships, and successful adult learner

transitions into postsecondary education.

The study will examine California Community Colleges and Adult Schools in CAEP

who are implementing ADE, how programs are structured, who they serve, what

makes implementation successful, and what barriers continue to limit expansion.

Stay Connected!

Research outreach begins September 2026.

For questions about the study, please contact: Lisa Mednick Takami or Dulce Delgadillo
