Advancing CA Adult Education Model Program Nomination Now Open

In 2022, the CAEP Office and CAEP TAP recognized Castro Valley Adult & Career Education for piloting a fully online citizenship preparation class to make it more accessible and convenient to a larger segment of the community. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the citizenship preparation class was in-person, open entry/open exit and offered on weekday afternoons. During the first year of the pandemic, the existing format produced low enrollment numbers. In response to this challenge and the opportunities the pandemic presented, Castro Valley Adult & Career Education re-implemented their citizenship preparation program to an online format and enrollment increased to pre-pandemic levels. Learn more about this model program, including the unique features of the program and their outcomes, by clicking the link here

The Advancing CA Adult Education Model Program nomination program is open for 2023! The CAEP Office welcomes nominations of California Adult Education Programs, demonstrating innovative, emerging, or model practices for the Advancing CA Adult Education Award and recognition at California’s CAEP Summit. Model CAEP programs must be aligned to approved CAEP program areas and the adult education state priorities: learner transition, program development, equity, leadership, technology and distance learning, program evaluation, and marketing. The adult education state priorities align with the CCCCO Vision for Success goals and the CDE Superintendent’s Initiatives.

Benefits to participating in the project:

  1. Showcase a new, emerging, and/or promising program.
  2. Share practices with other adult education programs and practitioners.
  3. A video capturing the highlights of the top two scoring programs is created.
  4. All qualifying program nominations are published on the CAEP website.
  5. All qualifying program nominations are recognized at the annual CAEP Summit.
  6. Stories and videos may be highlighted at conferences throughout California and distributed to local, regional, and state officials.

How to participate in the project:

Nominations must highlight a California Adult Education Program (CAEP) approved program area and may be submitted by any CAEP funded agency during the open nomination period. This year’s nomination period is March 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023. All nominations will be reviewed for completeness and for how closely they address the rubric criteria stated on the nomination form. Incomplete nominations and nominations that do not address the rubric criteria will not be considered.

To get started, go to the Request Support page on the CAEP website (caladulted.org) and register as a new user or login to the website. Once logged in, click on the box that says Submit Nomination.

California Community Colleges Technical Assistance Project Needs Assessment Survey

The Chancellor’s Office, in partnership with the California Department of Education, has selected North Orange Continuing Education (NOCE) to serve as the California Community Colleges Adult Education Technical Assistance Provider (CC TAP). The CC TAP will seek to enhance the current technical assistance provided under the California Adult Education Program (CAEP) by expanding the support for community colleges with noncredit adult education programs. Together, with the current CAEP TAP, the CC TAP will support and promote the CAEP Office efforts to increase student outcomes for CAEP noncredit students, career mobility for adult learners, and provide equitable training and technical assistance services for the CAEP community.

This survey serves as part of a discovery process in NOCE’s inception year, to prioritize needs in the field, identify gaps in service, and enhance the current technical assistance capacity. Please take a moment to share with us your invaluable feedback to support noncredit community colleges and the CAEP consortia.

The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, April 21, 2023

The CC TAP greatly appreciates your participation in this brief survey!

PPIC: A Regional Look at California’s Latest Employment Trends

In their latest blog post, PPIC addresses the current trends in California’s employment, while also examining what is projected to happen in the coming months. While employment is higher than it was before the pandemic, California’s economy could face headwinds in the coming months. California’s labor market continues to show signs of strength, with employment now 1.7% higher than it was before the pandemic. However, countervailing economic forces add volatility and uncertainty over the coming months: interest rates are rising, inflation remains high, regional banking is under pressure, tech layoffs are mounting after years of strong growth and hiring, and statewide unemployment has gone up slightly (4.3% in February vs. 4.2% in January). These trends are likely to have varying implications across California’s unique regions, reflecting, in part, differences in local sectors. PPIC looks at how seven major regions are faring and discusses the factors driving job growth in different parts of the state.
