Meet four remarkable students that remind us that talent, purpose, and perseverance often emerge from the most challenging circumstances, and that a little support can make a lasting difference.
Jorge Reyes is a non-traditional student at East Los Angeles College who returned to school after thirteen years in another profession. Now, he’s leading design teams and dedicating his future to creating affordable housing and community-centered developments.
Andrea Factor, a student at El Camino College, sees architecture as a bridge between people, nature, and community. Her thoughtful, creative work has already earned her awards and recognition.
Jose Ubaldo, studying at Glendale Community College, balances full-time work, family responsibilities, and campus leadership—all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. His story is one of discipline and deep dedication.
Matthew Haak, an IPAL (Integrated Path to Licensure) student at USC, is on track to become the first in his program to graduate already licensed. He’s not just achieving his own goals, he’s mentoring peers and lifting others along the way.
These students are among thirteen outstanding recipients of this year’s Widom and Welch Scholarships. Their journeys remind us that a little support can make a lasting difference.

Mel Ferris Architectural Scholarship
