CAFI Celebrates Black History Month
This month, CAFI and the Community Action Partnership celebrate Black History Month. Community Action comes out of President Lyndon B. Johnson's "War on Poverty" and from the advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1960, the Father of Community Action, Sargent Shriver, formed a partnership with Dr. King, which led to the creation of Community Action Agencies.
This month, we continue to honor Dr. King's legacy by uplifting our communities and working to eliminate poverty, one step at a time.

If you or you know someone affected by the tornado and need assistance, please contact both the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 and FEMA at 1-800-621-3362. We encourage you to talk to both agencies to file the disaster assistance application. Primarily, through the American Red Cross, you will be assigned a case worker to assist you with recovery planning and resource referrals in the community.
Why Should I file the FEMA and American Red Cross assistance application?
Recovery takes a long time, lots of energy, and money. In order to help the survivors of the storm in the next couple of years, the community needs accurate data on the number of people affected by the tornado on January 12th, 2023. Applying for assistance helps to give a snapshot of our community’s needs.
Currently, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has set up a Disaster Response Center in Troup County and Meriwether County. The address is below -
FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers-
- William J. Griggs Community Center
716 Glenn Roberson Dr. LaGrange, GA, 30241
- West Georgia Technical College
17529 Roosevelt Highway, Greenville, GA, 30222
Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT – 7 days a week.
If you cannot make it in person, call 1-800 - 621-3362 (FEMA). People who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585. The toll-free numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, seven days a week.

Our New Year begins with committing to providing our staff with a healthier work environment and culture. We care about mental and physical health and encourage our employees to exercise and care for themselves.
We thank Coweta Family Connection for coming to the CAFI Newnan Head Start Center to provide a care support opportunity for our parents. A parent café is where parents can meet and share their stories, experiences, worries, fears, and wisdom, and find community and strength together. Throughout this event, our parents were able to share and motivate each other.
On January 25th, our Mental Health and Disabilities team hosted a parent brunch in Newnan!
Dr. Eric Marks led the forum and discussion about how to build relationships that last a lifetime. He helped our guests identify their love languages, provided strategies on how to strengthen communication, and work intentionally to meet their partner's needs. Our menu included hot pancakes, fresh fruit, southern styles cheese grits, and a variety of delicious fruit juices.
Our guests participated in a newlywed game, Taboo: Sweetheart Edition, and Name That Tune: Love Edition. Our game winners took home date night movie baskets, Amazon gift cards, and Southern Soaks bath salts.

On January 26th, our Mental Health & Disabilities team members participated in a community event to distribute school supplies to children in our community. We donated notebooks, pencils, pens, glue sticks, books, crayons, and colored pencils.
We are proud to support Coweta Family Connections to serve children and families in our community.

This is done by inviting the Carroll County Community to join us in running (or walking) in both our 5k and our Fun Run. This event is perfect for all ages as it's never too early to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and substance use disorders.
A free Fun Run will be held before the 5k starts for anyone who wants to participate.
Proceeds from this event will aid CMHA in assisting members of the Carroll County Community who are stuggling with their mental health as well as substance use disorders.
