Community Action Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
|
Did you know that Community Action comes out of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty and from the advocacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? This led to the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, which created the Community Action Network of national and locally-focused organizations that connect millions of children and families to greater opportunity.
On January 17th, we remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and strive to continue his legacy through empowering families and individuals in our community.

COVID-19 Vaccine: Children Ages 5 to 11
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use authorization for children ages 5 to 11 years old. Now, anyone age 5 and older is eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Getting vaccinated is an important way to protect your child’s health during the pandemic, especially as new variants of the virus emerge.
COVID-19 Booster Shots
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently amended its Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for COVID-19 booster shots. Now, everyone ages 12 and older should get a booster shot to enhance their protection.
The timing of your booster depends on which vaccine you have received and how long it’s been since you received the vaccine.
If you received Pfizer or Moderna
If you received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, you should get a booster 6 months after your second shot if you are 12 years of age or older.
If you received Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen
If you received the Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine, you should get a booster 2 months after your shot if you are 18 years of age or older.
Types of booster shots
Please note that your booster may be any of the COVID-19 vaccines authorized in the United States. That means you can choose the vaccine type you originally received, or mix and match by selecting a different type of vaccine for your booster shot.

Pediatric Care During COVID-19

Pediatric COVID-19 Testing
As new variants of the virus emerge and spread, parents may be worried about their child’s health and possible COVID-19 exposure. Before you take your child for a COVID-19 test, it’s important to know the proper location for their medical circumstance.
Know Where to Go
If you are concerned your child may have been exposed to COVID-19 and is:
-
Asymptomatic (showing no symptoms): Find a local COVID-19 testing site near you.
- Showing mild to moderate symptoms: Contact your pediatrician’s office directly to book a COVID-19 testing appointment.
- Experiencing severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, unable to keep liquids down, lethargy, or severe gastrointestinal symptoms: Seek immediate medical care at the nearest pediatric emergency department.
