Did You Know?

Did you know there is a five-acre urban rooftop park and sustainable organic farm in downtown Houston? If you take a visit over the holiday season (or any other time), know that our PVAMU Extension specialists with the Small Farm Institute are experts in urban agriculture and happy to help you learn more about building your own sustainable garden at home.

CAFNR's Fall Class of 2023

Celebrating Student Success

Congratulations to the 26 exceptional College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) graduates. These young leaders have worked hard to earn their degrees, and we are proud to see them represent the College.

We also want to take this opportunity to thank the faculty and staff who participated in or attended the graduation ceremony. Your presence meant a lot to the students, and it showed that we are a community that supports student success.

If you could not attend, click here to watch the ceremony and hear words of wisdom from President Tomikia P. LeGrande and guest speaker Dr. Dietra Trent.

Along with the very successful weekly Farmers Market, we provided fresh vegetables and eggs to our local community. Thanks to the former city of Prairie View mayor and current city council member David Allen, Information, Impact and Sustainability Center (IISC) Director TeKedra Pierre and Assistant Director Trevior Mays, along with Sarah WiemkenDebra BradfordWillie DeWalt, and Braylon Shavers (Farm Employee/2023 College of Business grad) for harvesting mustard greens to distribute to residents in Alta Vista and the surrounding Prairie View community.

Special thanks to Cassandra GrayAdrian Avina, and the Poultry Center team for preparing eggs for distribution.

Recently spotted on the farm was Clarence Bunch, Ph.D., and students working to revitalize the PVAMU Extension Urban Agriculture Demonstration site. The plot is located at PVAMU on the Gov. Bill and Vara Daniel Farm and Ranch and will surely provide an abundance of impact on our local producers. Looking forward to seeing a thriving site by our 2024 Ag Field Days (April 19-20)!

The Farmers Market will be back every Wednesday starting on February 14, 2024. Be sure to visit and support our Student Garden Club and local vendors!
