Flooding in Kentucky Brings Community Together

Hindman Hills Apartments, located in Hindman Hills, KY, luckily had no physical damage to their property during the area's recent flooding. They were, however, without electricity and water for many days. With no power, every resident on the property lost everything in their refrigerators, and their water was unsafe to drink when it was finally turned back on. The city stepped in and brought portable showers to the parking lot of the property so residents could safely bathe, and the property management company, Winterwood, Inc., has taken numerous cases of water to the property to distribute to residents.

For additional help, Paige Grigsby, Property Manager for Winterwood, Inc., quickly reached out to the CAHEC Foundation to apply for its Disaster Relief Initiative, which is available to all CAHEC-sponsored properties that encounter a disaster. “We are so grateful that this was available to our residents,” Paige explained. “Anything we can provide them during this uncertain time is greatly appreciated!” The CAHEC Foundation awarded Hindman Hills a grant of $3,000 to help purchase grocery store gift cards to replace lost food items and cases of water to distribute to the residents.

Paige also shared that, due to the flooding, the start of school was delayed for students in their area. “Hindman Elementary School is across the street from our property, and since the students couldn’t go to the open house, the teachers brought the open house to them!” Teachers brought games, sidewalk chalk, and books to the property to engage with students and give them a break from the chaos. We love sharing stories of the community coming together to serve!

Mission Expedition

CAHEC's Mission Expedition was created to get employees out of the office to see our mission in action. We love having the opportunity to see what we’ve invested in, and to experience first-hand why we work so hard for the communities we serve. Our most recent expedition led us to the Southeast Raleigh Elementary School and YMCA, Quarry Trace Apartments, and Walnut Trace Apartments. Check out the video recap here!

Celebrating 30 years at CAHEC

Meet David T. Peet, the very first President of CAHEC. He served from 1992-2002 and grew the organization from one to 23 employees.

David also helped grow CAHEC beyond the scope of North Carolina and into the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. During his tenure, he raised in excess of $250 million to help finance more than 3,000 units of affordable housing.

CAHEC wouldn't be where it is today without David, and we certainly couldn't celebrate 30 years without recognizing the foundation he laid for our organization so many years ago.
