CAHEC Connection                                   November 2019

In This Issue

Since 2004, CAHEC has offered the Open Doors Homeownership Grant to assist nonprofit organizations who develop for-sale affordable housing within our footprint. To date, CAHEC has awarded $610,000 towards this homeownership initiative to help provide housing to families earning 80 percent or less of the area median income. As our team of grant readers reviewed the applications this year, we evaluated how each organization addressed a strong community need, the positive impact their development would have on the community, and their strategy for alleviating the shortage of affordable housing. We also considered the social services provided to homeowners and the organization's proposed use of CAHEC's funding.

We are excited to announce the recipients of CAHEC's 2019 Open Doors Homeownership Grant:

$25,000: Habitat for Humanity of Goldsboro-Wayne; Goldsboro, NC
$15,000: Habitat for Humanity of Susquehanna; Bel Air, MD
$10,000: Habitat for Humanity of Madison County;  Huntsville , AL

Each of these organizations is making important strides in providing their communities with much-needed affordable housing. To read about each organization and learn how their developments will change the lives of residents in their communities, please visit our  website.

Last month, several CAHEC staff participated in a Playhouse Build in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Durham. For this project, nonprofits from around the Triangle make a donation to the Habitat affiliate in exchange for a team building day. Each nonprofit organization then creates, decorates, and assembles a playhouse which can later be donated to another nonprofit, or it can be sold in the Habitat's Restore. We chose to donate the home back to Habitat for them to sell and the proceeds will go toward building more affordable homes in the Durham community.
This year, our staff decided on a "Be Your Own Superhero" theme and decorated each side of the playhouse with various comic book heroes. Spiderman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are a few of the characters that will hopefully inspire children to be courageous, do good in their community, and ultimately empower them to be their own superhero.

MIAMission in Action

  • Several CAHEC staff attended the grand opening of Cypress Cove Apartments in Wilmington, NC, last week . We're proud to be part of a new development that provides 200 units of affordable housing for the area!
  • CAHEC is pleased to announce the closing of three ground-mounted solar developments, which will provide over 9.7 kilowatts of renewable energy to residents of New York State. Residents will be able subscribe to the Community Solar model and receive energy credits, which in turn will decrease their monthly energy bill. We're excited to see the impact this will have on the community.
