CAHEC Connection
March 2018
In This Issue
Each year, CAHEC awards $50,000 through our  Open Doors Homeownership Grant - a grant designed to supplement costs that non-profits incur while developing for-sale affordable housing. In 2015, Athens Land Trust in Athens, GA, was one of our three grant recipients, and used their $10,000 grant to EarthCraft™-certify nine new construction single-family homes. The first three phases of the development, known as the Cottages at Cannontown, began construction in 2016 and were completed in 2017. Each of the families who moved into the completed homes were thrilled to be homeowners and, because of the homeownership courses provided by Athens Land Trust, were ready to conquer any obstacles that came along with owning a home.
One of the homeowners, Amanda Cross, had always dreamed of owning her own house. She and her 12-year old daughter lived in an apartment and never believed homeownership would be a possibility for their family. Amanda learned about the Affordable Homeownership Program offered through Athens Land Trust and was hesitant to move forward at first, but she eventually made the call and discovered she was eligible for the program. "Our apartment was just getting too small for me and my daughter," Amanda explained. "I wanted my daughter to live in a home that she was proud of, something that she could call 'mine.' That ultimately motivated me to take the steps to enter the homeownership program."

MissionMission in Action

  • Congratulations to Red Oak Ridge in Lincoln, AL, and Andover Park in Kinston, NC, on collectively receiving nearly $25,000 through the CAHEC Foundation's Active Lifestyle Grant! Funding was used to help install the two youth playgrounds pictured below. We are sure the residents will enjoy using these awesome amenities.
  • The CAHEC Foundation supports School Food Pantries to ensure youth residents have access to healthy meals on nights and weekends during the school year. Here are two notes from residents that make Nutrition Assistance a worth-while initiative for our organization:
    • "My family would like to thank you for your support because this program has been a blessing to us. Food is very expensive and most times it is extremely hard for us to make ends meet. It's a great feeling to know that programs like this exist!"
    • "My son and I would like to thank you for all the delicious and healthy food you are giving us. We are cooking at night a lot more now and it's making us closer as a family - thank you!"
