Affordable Housing is Helping Veterans

It's easy to feel passionate about providing safe, affordable housing when residents share stories about the positive impact it has had on their lives. Samuel Conner, a resident of Mingo Village Apartments, definitely has a story worth sharing.

Samuel grew up in Glen Cove, NY, in the 1950's. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army and was deployed to Vietnam; he was proud to be fighting for his country. After serving his time - 2 years, 2 months, and 25 days, to be exact - Samuel was looking forward to returning home to his family. He beamed with pride as he described how he felt the day he was discharged in 1972. "I was ready to get back to my family. I wore my uniform home and I remember my boots were shined. I had a big duffle bag in one hand and my discharge papers in the other." Soon after, Samuel got married, started a family, and opened his own floor covering business. He moved to North Carolina in 2006.

In 2012, Samuel was invited to be part of a cross-country motorcycle ride with a large group of veterans and vet supporters. They would begin their journey in California and end up at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers. Samuel documented his journey daily for his family so they could later read about his cross-country experiences. It was so well written that they encouraged him to turn his journal into a book, which was later published.

Our Mission in Action

  • Congrats to Village at Stone Creek in Asheboro, NC; Jake's Ridge in Oxford, NC; and Camden Pointe Apartments in Mocksville, NC, on collectively receiving $30,000 in playground funding through CAHEC's Active Lifestyle Grant. CAHEC enjoys providing financial assistance for outdoor recreation areas so youth residents have a place to stay active.

  • The CAHEC Foundation recently donated over $16,000 to the North Carolina Banker's Association Foundation's Camp Challenge. Because of these donations, high-achieving, low-resource students from across North Carolina can attend the camp at no cost to their families. What makes this camp unique is that students participate in a variety of traditional camp activities while also engaging in a personal finance course throughout their one-week stay.
  • 801 Main Street Apartments in Newport News, VA, and Camden Pointe Apartments in Mocksville, NC, both received computer workstations through CAHEC's Technology Resource Grant this month. On-site technology centers will give residents the tools they need to perform online banking, pursue an education, search for employment, and much more.

Chuck Newcomer Retiring in May

After dedicating nearly 20 years to our organization, Chuck Newcomer, VP, Risk Management, has announced his retirement. Chuck joined CAHEC in March of 1998 as our second employee. As shared by Dana Boole, our President and CEO, "Chuck's passion, perspective, and impact has been second to none. His wit and sense of humor will be remembered for years to come." Although Chuck's able guidance will be missed, his long-standing contributions and commitment to our mission will always be part of our fabric. His last day at CAHEC will be May 5th.

Please join us in thanking Chuck for his dedication to CAHEC and his countless contributions to the affordable housing industry. We wish him well in all future endeavors, which - at a minimum - will include bicycling, fishing, and golf. Our eternal thanks, Chuck!
