President's Message

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone. My focus this year was to get our councils and regions up and running. Right after the restructure of CAHPERD, the pandemic hit and CAHPERD’s focus was on how to support our members with online and hybrid instruction. With the return to conferences and professional development in person, I wanted to focus on making sure our members know how CAHPERD benefits them through the councils and regions.

To recap, as a member, you are automatically part of a council based on the area of interest you marked when you became a member. There are 12 State Councils:

  1. Council of Health Education,
  2. Council of Secondary Physical Education
  3. Council of Recreation
  4. Council of Dance
  5. Council of Interscholastic Athletics
  6. Council of Adapted Physical Education (SCAPE)
  7. Council of Diversity & Social Justice
  8. Council of Early Childhood/Elementary Physical Education
  9. Council of Future Professionals
  10. Council of Higher Education
  11. Council of Leadership & Administration
  12. Council of Retired Members

This means you can attend your council’s meeting. Being part of the council means you have a network of colleagues to discuss issues, problem-solve, and collaborate with statewide!  This resource is truly invaluable. No matter the size of your district, imagine having a network of people you can talk to and collaborate with.

As a member, you are also part of one CAHPERD’s 11 Regions:

Region 1 - Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma

Region 2 - Butte, Glenn, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, Trinity

Region 3 - Alpine, Colusa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sierra, Sutter, Yolo, Yuba

Region 4  - Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Solano

Region 5  - Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz

Region 6  - Amador, Calaveras, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tuolumne

Region 7  - Fresno, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Tulare

Region 8  - San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Kern

Region 9  - Imperial, Orange, San Diego

Region 10 - San Bernardino, Inyo, Riverside, Mono

Region 11 - Los Angeles

A special thank you to Julie Kuelh- Kitchen who has worked very hard this Spring to fill the vacancies of the regional chairs. The Regions meet twice a year and one time is during the CAHPERD Conference. By attending your region’s meeting, you can help identify the specific needs of your region. For example, Region 5 hosted a local training on a Saturday for their teachers and Region 9 hosted an awards ceremony to honor teachers of the year (HPE) from the different districts in their region. There are funds available for those Regions who want to develop and submit a plan and budget to the CAHPERD Board of Directors for approval.

Thank you to my Executive Director, Brent Powell, Financial Director, Barbara Ann Buckalew Board of Directors, Cabinet, and the CAHPERD Committees for all their hard work this year and support.  I truly appreciate all you have done. Finally, I want to thank the members for your support this year. We had great attendance at the State Conference this year!

It has been my honor to be your President for 2023-24. June 1 the gavel passes to your next CAHPERD President, James Clemmer and I look forward to supporting him as Past-President.

CAHPERD Dance Council

Our first CAHPERD Dance Intensive Workshop since prior to the pandemic finally manifested on the campus of Cal State Long Beach and what a great day it was!

I want to thank each of you for your support, encouragement, and guidance moving through the process as well as those of you who were in attendance to witness the energy and excellence of the students, our faculty, and our volunteer team for the day. It's been my honor to serve, observe, and learn as CAHPERD's Dance Council Chair for the past 2 years, and I am confident that our future is in wonderful hands under the direction of our incoming Dance Chair Keisha Clark-Booth!

I believe that the success of the event is a great start to the resurgence, growth, and awareness of the Dance Council in years to come. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if I may be of assistance in future CAHPERD endeavors.
