DID YOU KNOW...

9/14

The only time in recent years that discretionary funding for non-militarized programs equaled the militarism budget was at the height of the COVID pandemic, when Congress enacted billions to stem the dual health and economic crises. Congress has now ended those programs.

A project of CALC

This project seeks to define how militarism,

racism and climate crisis are interconnected.

The project will document how national security is not rooted in militarism but rather

in the meeting of human needs such as health, education, good jobs,

good infrastructure and a livable climate.

Planet Versus Pentagon

is now sponsoring weekly vigils calling for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

Please join us for a vigil calling for diplomacy and an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and Israel.

Old Federal Building

corner of 7th & Pearl, Eugene

Some signs will be provided. Bring your own if you can.

We abhor all violence. We are heartbroken by the killing and maiming of people in the Middle East, whether they are Palestinian, Israeli, or citizens of any other country, particularly innocent children, people with disabilities and the elderly.

We call for an immediate ceasefire and a stop to the killing or injuring or any type of violence to anyone. We demand sending humanitarian aid to the civilians affected, and demand members of Congress not send more military aid. Diplomacy not weapons is needed in the Middle East. Only the weapons manufacturers and oil industry benefit from war. The Military Industrial Congressional Complex has the biggest carbon footprint in the world.

In peace,

Support Youth Leaders

¡Apoya Unión de Activistas (UdA)!

"Those four years taught me about the strength of our communities and the power our voices hold. Unión de Activistas was a safe haven for me."

-- Anahí, UdA graduate

As Anahí’s statement above reflects, Unión de Activistas provides a safe haven for students. Regenerating social connections and backing youth is more important than ever.

Given the increased requests we have been receiving to support students and families, we know this is not enough. A donor has backed UdA with an amazing $10,000 gift! Your generous contribution would allow us to build on this support and expand the hours of the UdA position. Additional staff hours would include professional development and time to coordinate the Radio Juventud Youth Radio Project.

Please use our donation page [www.nfggive.org/donation/93-0691194] to help fund UdA.

American Friends of

A Land for All: Two States One Homeland

Confederation, a practical elaboration of the two-state solution, is a plan to resolve the 100-year conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, two peoples who hold a deep spiritual and historical attachment to the same land.

Confederation is a framework for peace that is founded on the principles of equality, dignity, partnership, independence, interdependence, reconciliation, and mutual respect.

While each group has a strong and distinct national identity, the facts on the ground make clear that Jews and Palestinians are geographically, environmentally, and economically intertwined. Moreover, both peoples consider the entire territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea to be their homeland. For Jews, that homeland includes Hebron in the West Bank as much as Tel Aviv. For Palestinians, it encompasses Jaffa within the Green Line as much as Ramallah beyond it.

Any solution to the conflict must recognize these deep emotional connections and this historical reality and build a framework that accommodates those feelings and convictions.

Thus far, All In Lane County has prevented 795 households from becoming homeless, moved 200 households from a state of being unsheltered into permanent housing, and created or improved 294 emergency shelter beds.

This year, Eugene will elect a new mayor, who will serve at least four years and help set the course for our future. Although there are two candidates, if one gets over 50 percent of the vote in the May primary, that person is declared the winner without the need of a vote in November. Consequently, you will want to know the candidates’ positions now on the issues facing Eugene.

Candidates:

Shanaè Joyce-Stringer is an experienced educator and entrepreneur. Her career has spanned diverse roles in education since 2006, including teaching in Florida, Oregon, and China and coordinating programs at the district level in Lane County. In 2011, she ventured into entrepreneurship with B.L.A.Q. Events, and in 2018 founded Shanaè Joyce-Stringer Enterprise, offering coaching, speaking, and retail services. mmm www.shanaeforeugene.com

Kaarin Knudson is a licensed architect, educator, and leader with more than 20 years’ experience advancing sustainable design and community-led solutions. In 2017, she founded the housing advocacy organization Better Housing Together (BHT), to increase housing affordability, diversity, and supply in Lane County, and in 2018, she was awarded the City of Eugene’s “Community Award.” Knudson advised on the implementation of Oregon’s landmark middle housing laws and advocated for the creation of Eugene’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund. mmm www.kaarinformayor.com

Museum of Techno Art show

and

2nd Friday Art Walk

The Emerald Art Center presents a show by The Museum of Techno Art (MTA). The MTA showcases art with technology or industrial themes, reflecting on the history of human invention, retrofuturism, or imaginative machines of the future.

Show dates are March 6th - 29th

Gallery hours are 11am - 4pm Wednesday - Saturday

500 Main St. Springfield

Reception / Art Walk is Friday, March 8th from 5 - 7:30pm

Featured artists will include Barbora Bakalarova, Rob Bolman, Paul Brown, Neil Conner, Steve La Riccia, Joe Mross, Max Rink, and others.

Also showing featured EAC members:

Jo Dunnick will be showing: "Color And Water... Tell A Story". When looking at the same image it is common for viewers to offer different back stories because their life experiences shade their vision of the image, or they may see things that she never saw or intended.

Sarah Bloom Kinser is showing "Landscapes of Oregon." Sarah is showcasing a selection of her acrylic landscapes depicting Oregon. The images she is placing in this show are ones that have come to her through time and patience or have “magically” appeared and she just happened to be holding the brush. She hopes you enjoy this collection of “stories” ... whatever they might mean to you.

Shirley Reade's show focuses on beautiful coastal scenes while vacationing around the world! She took over four hundred reference photos of the sea and birds. Using traditional painting techniques, Shirley has also branched out to multimedia by adding sand, shells and driftwood found while walking the gorgeous beaches.

Emerald Art Center announces two new participants for 2nd Friday Art Walk: Plank Town Brewing and Squachos/Monkey Paw.

Plank Town Brewing will present works by owner, Bart Caridio. As our new 2nd Friday Art Walk sponsor, Plank Town will be making fine craft brews available to Emerald Art Center, for your purchase at our EAC bar. You will also find selections from our friends at Iris Vineyards Wine Bar.

The MTA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is seeking funding to expand in the future. Memberships are available and donations are welcome. steamworkslabs@centurylink.net

Power Half-Hour for Gaza:

Channel grief & outrage into action to stop a genocide

Over 100 days into the genocide in Gaza, we are overwhelmed with sorrow and rage.

There are no words to describe the devastating pain of the last four months, in which the Israeli military has killed over 29,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 11,500 children. The highest court in the world has named Israel’s actions as plausibly a genocide. And the U.S. government is actively supporting the Israeli military as it wreaks devastation on the over 2 million Palestinians in Gaza.

It’s at this moment that we have come together as a political community in our daily half-hour to take action, Monday through Friday, for the past four months.

Join us as we take collective action to demand an immediate and lasting ceasefire and an end to Israeli siege, apartheid, occupation, and oppression of Palestinians.

Editor's preface:

The term "Dalit" originates from Sanskrit and means "broken" or "oppressed." It was adopted in the early 20th century by [India] social reformers and leaders in an effort to challenge the derogatory labels assigned to this community. Despite this effort, the caste system and its followers still subjugate the Dalit caste to social and economic marginalization, limited access to education, restricted job opportunities, and segregation in many aspects of life.

------------------

Yashica Dutt, the award-winning author of Coming Out as Dalit, is an internationally acclaimed journalist and one of the world’s leading feminist voices on caste. Dutt is a notable caste expert recognized for highlighting Dalit rights globally and her voice has been instrumental in understanding the realities of caste within the increasingly prominent Indian diaspora. Dutt's work has been published in the New York Times, Foreign Policy and The Atlantic, and she has been featured on the BBC, The Guardian and PBS Newshour.

Coming Out as Dalit, which was published in India in 2019, quickly became a best-seller and is currently part of the curriculum in over 50 colleges and universities worldwide, including Harvard University, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis. Coming Out as Dalit is among the first books written by a Dalit author in English to win the prestigious Indian Arts and Letters Award for young writers in 2020.

Thursday, March 21, m 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Art House, 492 E. 13th Ave, Eugene

Filmmaker/photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko set out on a 750-mile hike through the entire length of the Grand Canyon. From the outset, the challenge was far more than they bargained for. More people have stood on the moon than have completed a continuous through hike of the Canyon. McBride and Fedarko took a sectional approach, achieving a feat that many adventurers have taken decades to complete. Others have lost their lives trying. But their quest was more than just an endurance test — it was also a way to draw attention to the unprecedented threats facing one of our most revered landscapes.

Throughout their passage, McBride and Fedarko encountered an astonishingly diverse and powerful landscape, rich in history, that is now facing perhaps the gravest crisis in the 98-year history of the Grand Canyon National Park.

Where has Non-Violence Worked?

Follow-Up on Peace Lecture Question

At the Salem Peace Lecture featuring Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis in October, a question was asked about where one could find examples of nonviolence being used effectively for social change in today's world.

In response, I promised to send out a link to "Nonviolence News," a publication edited by novelist/activist Rivera Sun. She assembles 30-50 stories each week about people and groups who are employing nonviolence for social change. You can find (and subscribe to) "Nonviolence News" here: https://nonviolencenews.org.
