URGENT: Call Now!

Tell Governor Murphy

to SAVE Low-Speed E-Bikes!

CALL (609) 292-6000 or TEXT (732) 605-5455

to stop Governor Murphy

from signing S4834/A6235 into law.

S4834/A6235, legislation that will require riders to have registration and a license to ride ANY e-bike in NJ, including low-speed e-bikes that go under 20mph, has passed both the Senate and the Assembly on Monday, January 12. The final version, described below, includes new amendments but continues to place unnecessary and burdensome restrictions on low-speed e-bikes while leaving higher-risk vehicles unregulated.

This bill was rushed through during the legislative lame duck session, and passed through committees and full floor votes in both houses. It is now on Governor Murphy's desk waiting to be signed into law.

Thank you to everyone who joined NJBWC, coalition partners, and the nearly 5,000 action letter co-signers who reached out to legislators. Unfortunately we are not done. We must continue to take collective action to oppose this bill and stop it from becoming law.

We need you to

CALL Governor Murphy NOW

at (609) 292-6000

to STOP him from signing this bill into law.

The final version of the bill is by far the most restrictive e-bike law in the entire county and sets New Jersey up to become the most unfriendly state in the country.

The final version of this bill:

  • Eliminates the current classifications used in 46 states and instead puts forward confusing new categories. Creating uncertainty at state lines.

  • Continues to place a burden on vulnerable populations by requiring registration and license for low-speed e-bikes (Class 1).

  • Creates new age requirements for young riders, which are needed for high-speed motorized bicycles or e-motos, but also includes requirements for license and registration on low-speed e-bikes that do not have a throttle and can only go up to 20 mph.

  • Doesn't provide a clear plan to implement the law. Existing legislation, passed in 2019, for Class 3 e-bikes requires registration, insurance, and a license has not been implemented or enforced, but this bill calls for a massive increase in those requirements.

This bill ultimately fails to address the real safety issues that contribute to more than 500 fatalities and 3,000 series injuries on New Jersey's roadways in 2025: motor vehicles and unregulated high-speed e-motos.
