URGENT CALL TO ACTION
TRAWL BAN LEGISLATION TOMORROW
An amendment to H.B. 442 includes language to ban shrimp trawling in all inside waters and ½ mile off the beach! This amendment with the language below will be read and voted on tomorrow (Tuesday, June 17th) at 10:00am in the Senate Agriculture, Energy, and Environment Committee.
PROHIBIT SHRIMP TRAWLING IN ALL INSHORE FISHING WATERS AND WITHIN ONE-HALF MILE OF THE SHORELINE
SECTION 3.(a) G.S. 113-187(d) reads as rewritten:
"(d) Any person in charge of a commercial fishing operation conducted in violation of the following provisions of this Subchapter or the following rules of the Marine Fisheries Commission; and any person in charge of any vessel used in violation of the following provisions of the Subchapter or the following rules, shall be guilty of a Class A1 misdemeanor. The violations of the statute or the rules for which the penalty is mandatory are:
(3a) Taking or attempting to take shrimp using a trawl net in any coastal fishing waters other than areas of the Atlantic Ocean located more than one-half mile from the shoreline.
We have been told this language will be read and offered as an amendment for H.B. 442 tomorrow morning (Tuesday, June 17th) at 10:00am in the Senate Agriculture, Energy, and Environmental Committee.
WE NEED YOU TO SPEAK AGAINST THIS AMENDMENT!
Immediately contact all members of the NC Senate Agriculture, Energy, and Environmental Committee and tell them,
“I oppose the trawl ban amendment and support H.B. 442 as approved by the House of Representatives!”
