CALL TO ACTION - Minimum Wage Hearing Set for February 8th

Do you know the negative impacts that could result from raising the minimum wage to $15? Jobs will be lost, barriers to employment will be greater and Maryland will find itself at a regional disadvantage.
In order to improve competitiveness and attract businesses, the cost of doing business in Maryland needs to be reasonable and remain on par with our neighboring states.

The time to act is now - join us at the State House on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. and testify against raising the minimum wage to $15. We need companies of all sizes to share how this increase would impact your business.
Will you stand with us?

Maryland State House, Annapolis

2/08/19 12:30 p.m. - 02/08/19 5:00 p.m.

*Hearing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. but subject to start later.

If you are able to testify on February 8th, please contact Leonardo McClarty at  lmcclarty@howardchamber.com . Are voices are louder together!

Government Contractors Meet with Calvin Ball

The partial government shutdown may be over for now, but that doesn't mean that our federal government contracting members have stopped feeling the effects. This morning, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball, Chamber President Leonardo McClarty, U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes and Howard County Economic Development Authority CEO, Larry Twele, sat down for a discussion with local federal government contractors to talk about the impact of the shutdown and what we can do to support them. The meeting, which took place at one of our GovConnects members, Sparksoft Corporation, was informative and productive. Thank you to all of the federal government contractors who were able to attend and share their experiences.

Opioids, Business & Employment Luncheon Recap

The weather was less than ideal, but that didn't stop our members and members of the community from attending our first member lunch of 2019, focused on Opioids, Business and Employment. Barbara Allen, Chair of the Howard County Opioid Crisis Community Council and founder of James' Place, named for her son, who lost his life to the disease of addiction, started the discussion by talking about the work various organizations are already doing in the fight against addiction. Allen then introduced moderator Zach Snitzer, co-founder of the Maryland Addiction Recovery Center, who is also in recovery.
Snitzer spent the next hour asking panelists including Jef Fagan, Principle Attorney, Offit | Kurman, Bob Claire, General Manager, Mobern Lighting Company and Erin Roth, Deputy Assistance Secretary, Dept. of Labor, Licensing & Regulation, questions about substance abuse and it's effects on the business community.

The conversation was powerful and opened many eyes to the resources available for employers, employees, human resources professionals and others. While the discussion was productive, the topic is so broad that there is still much to learn for all of us. You can learn more about some of the resources available through the county government here.
