Roadway Debris Removal

FHWA's "Innovation of the Month" features the North Texas Toll Authority's (NTTA's) creative solution to removing debris from roads while improving the safety of their responders.

Their vehicle-mounted removal systems allow operators to lower a plow-type blade to the roadway surface from inside the cab and push debris out of the travel lanes. These systems not only expedite removal, but more importantly allow the operator to execute the process from the safety of their truck cab.

ADA Transition Plan Map

FHWA and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) recently launched a new Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) "State DOT ADA Transition Plan & Inventory Mapping Application" with accompanying informational tutorial to help state DOTs understand and prioritize the elimination of inaccessible infrastructure when making transportation investments.

These new tools improve public access to and use of data that state DOTs publish regarding their progress and plans to improve accessibility in public-rights-of-way and transportation facilities. Users can also locate the ADA Transition Plan for each state DOT.

Estimating Effectiveness of

Safety Treatments without Crash Data

NCHRP has released "Estimating Effectiveness of Safety Treatments in the Absence of Crash Data", a guide for using alternative/surrogate safety measures for developing Crash Modification Factors (CMFs).

CMFs are developed from historic crash data to help safety professionals estimate the expected safety impacts of specific roadway treatments. There has been significant research to develop CMFs, such as those included in AASHTO's Highway Safety Manual and FHWA's CMF Clearinghouse.

Supplemental to the report is the web-only document "Estimating Effectiveness of Safety Treatments in the Absence of Crash Data" which describes the process of developing a guide for using alternative, or surrogate, measures of safety for developing CMFs and other quantifiable measures.
