CAM and the COVID-19 Pandemic
In the last two weeks, the world, Michigan, and our industry has changed drastically. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, we wanted to share with you what we are doing at the Construction Association of Michigan to support our employees and our members.

We are committed to the health and safety of our employees and took quick action to implement the technology necessary to allow for a seamless transition to a work-from-home model. All CAM employees are currently working remotely. We are always available for our members and colleagues. Email is being accessed, phone calls are being forwarded, and voicemail is checked throughout the day. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us or call (248) 972-1000.

Since Monday, we’ve had daily conversations with our lobbying firm, requesting clarifications on the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-21; our leadership has reached out to tax and legal professionals; and we have created a landing page on our website to collect and share the facts. As new information becomes available, including tax, unemployment and legal resources, we continue to add links to this website. We encourage you to check it regularly for updates.

If your company has produced information that may be of use to other members, you may email it to Tracey Alfonsi for inclusion in our list of resources. Special thanks to McAlpine PC, Butzel Long, Miller Canfield, Plante Moran, Doeren Mayhew, and Rehmann for their contributions.

Together we will get through this! However long COVID-19 impacts our lives and our work, eventually life will go back to normal. And the world will understand that we are all connected and better together than apart. Stay focused, stay healthy!
PPE Donations to Beaumont Are Needed
In the construction industry, we know all about the importance of utilizing appropriate equipment to protect the health and safety of our employees. Most contractors have a storage cabinet with safety goggles, face shields, Tyvek suits, and other PPE on stand-by in the event it becomes necessary in a particular application.

On Thursday, March 26, CAM received the following urgent request from Sara Klakulak, Manager, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Beaumont Health. The resources available to her team are in short supply and she’s calling upon the construction industry to donate the PPE necessary to continue their work:

As the number of COVID-19 cases in Michigan continues to rise, so too does the need for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other resources to help Beaumont clinicians safely and effectively provide care for the thousands of people affected by this virus. The Beaumont Health Foundation team is reaching out to corporate partners and friends in the community to try and secure masks, gloves, face shields, gowns, respirators and other materials for our caregivers.
This equipment plays a paramount role in safeguarding health care staff – as well as uninfected patients – from exposure to the virus. Clinicians, technicians and transporters face far greater odds of contracting the virus than the general public who may have the option of self-isolating. If our healthcare providers get sick, it can profoundly impact a hospital’s ability to provide care. To access an updated and comprehensive list of our most-needed items, please click  here .
All of us at Beaumont are grateful for the incredible show of support that so many individuals and businesses throughout the community have already given to our caregivers. I know many of you are busy trying to keep employee morale up while also continuing to provide customers with what they need.

We’d like to recognize Barton Malow and Goyette Mechanical for donations already made. We are calling on all of our members to inventory your available supplies and donate them where they are most needed – on the front lines with health care workers fighting this battle. To access an updated and comprehensive list of the most-needed items, please click  here .
How UPS Is Responding to the Coronavirus
UPS is closely monitoring the impact of the Coronavirus and we want to make sure you are kept up-to-date on what they are doing to keep members and customers like you safe while continuing to deliver around the world.
Here’s what we know and what you can expect:
  • Compliance with all government regulations and health safety guidelines related to the containment of COVID-19.

  • Many people are asking the same question: is it safe to receive and handle a shipment? The World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has stated that the likelihood of catching the COVID-19 virus by touching cardboard or other shipping containers is low.

  • If you prefer that your UPS driver does not deliver packages to your premises, you can arrange for your packages to be held for pickup at your local customer center for 2 weeks. When you wish to resume delivery to your business, you can request that to happen at the same UPS customer service counter you visit to pick up packages.

AIA: How "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Affects the Industry
AIA Michigan, AIA Detroit, and the AIA Michigan Government Affairs Committee are partnering to bring you this virtual roundtable around issues that are on everyone's mind after Governor Whitmer signed the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order. The roundtable takes place online on Tuesday, March 31st at 12:00 noon.

The conversation will be led by individuals who will bring their perspectives on such topics as business owners' responsibilities, what resources are available, and the current state of projects and construction.
