UPDATE ON HOTEL ROOM BLOCKS

2024 CAMA CONFERENCE IN BANFF, AB

The hotel room blocks for the 2024 CAMA Conference host hotel (Fairmont Banff Springs) and the oveflow hotel (Rimrock Resort) are SOLD OUT and no additional rooms will be added at this time. This is a testament to the high level of interest and attendance we are expecting, and we are thirlled to see such a strong response.

If you are still seeking accommodation, we recommend exploring the hotel properties owned by the Banff Lodging Company with CAMA delegates receiving a 20% discount. There are still rooms available during the Conference dates at eight of their hotels.

We are looking forward to a fantastic Conference and cannot wait to welcome you to this memorable event. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm.

BANFF LODGING COMPANY

Banff Lodging Company is an employee owned and operated Company in the heart of Banff. They have eleven properties located in the Banff National Park ranging from hotels to condos and suites, at separate price points. They do not offer room blocks, however we have negotiated a 20% discount for all CAMA delegates at their properties subject to availability for the period of June 2-7, 2024. Rates fluctuate based on dynamic pricing and the discount will be applied to the rate at the time of booking.

The only way to book a hotel at the Banff Lodging Company is to click here for their website and use the promo code CAMA to get 20% off the posted rates.

All these hotels are located between 2.4 km and 5.5 km from the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and are between $350.00 to $640.00 per night, and are in a ROAM Transit service area (except for the Rocky Mountain Resort which is outside the Town boundary).

LONELY AT THE TOP: AN EXAMINATION OF THE CHANGING DYNAMICS FOR CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICERS IN ALBERTA

Alberta Municipalities initiated a Future of Municipal Government project to explore and assess options for government structures that will enable municipalities to build thriving communities into the future.

They partnered with the School of Public Policy at the Unviersity of Calgary on this project. The latest paper in the Future of Muncipal Government series entitled "Lonely at the Top: An Examination of the Changing Dynamics for Chief Administrative Officers in Alberta Municipalities", authored by Kate Graham and Jesse Helmer, explores the role and tenure of CAOs in Alberta municipalities and the implications for those municipalities.

The paper concludes that overall CAOs are community-minded public servants who take pride and ownership of their work and have strong relationships with their administration.  At the same time, the paper reveals concerning trends of decreasing CAO tenure which can contribute to significant disruption to municipal organizations. The research points to negative political dynamics as being the greatest challenge of the role and (factor) in increasing transition.

Click here for a copy of the paper. A recording of the October 2023 webinar with the report's authors is also now available on ABmunis' Vimeo channel (noted below). Attendees delved into the report's findings and discussed potential solutions identified in the paper including greater role clarity, onboarding for CAOs and education for elected officials, and tapping into regional support network, among others.

2023 CAMA AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE NOMINATIONS

ENVIRONMENT LEADERSHIP & SUSTAINABILITY AWARD

City of Richmond, BC

Population Over 100,000

City Centre District Energy Utility

The City Centre District Energy Utility (CCDEU) is a district energy system that implements, & connects low-carbon energy sources in the Richmond City Centre area. The project is part of the City’s commitment to providing efficient & low-carbon local energy services at competitive rates. By ensuring that new developments are designed with either an on-site low-carbon energy plant (LCEP) or a mechanical system ready to connect to off-site district energy utility infrastructure, the CCDEU project is guaranteeing that resilient & sustainable energy will support the community for years to come.

The first two developments with an on-site LCEP have already been connected, & by full buildout in 2050 there will be 170 additional residential & mixed-use commercial development sites connected, totalling nearly 50 million ft2. The CCDEU will eventually recover heat from the regional district’s sewer force main & significant increases in efficiency will occur as on-site plants at developments are connected to the network. Over a million tonnes of carbon emissions are expected to have been avoided through the completion of this project, playing a crucial role in the City of Richmond achieving its goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
