Participants in the June 1st Town Hall

On June 1st, CAMBA organized and led a virtual Town Hall Meeting on Zoom with five other leading Brooklyn organizations in an effort streamed live on Facebook. The goal was to raise awareness about the value and impact of virtual enrichment and learning programs. CAMBA shared a video featuring virtual dance and cooking classes to show how community-based organizations like ours have been offering online enrichment programs for months as part of the COVID-19 response. Participants, which included 2,600 Facebook views and 1,600 comments online, heard compelling testimony from parents and youth on the importance of funding virtual programming for Summer 2020. Among the 126 participants on the Zoom Town Hall were NY State Senators Kevin Parker and Julia Salazar, along with City Council Member Farah Louis. Joining them were representatives from the offices of Council Members Robert Cornegy and Carlos Menchaca, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

CAMBA President & CEO Joanne M. Oplustil leads the charge in a June 5th op-ed advocating the importance of funding for nonprofits like CAMBA during the pandemic. "
Nonprofit organizations are our country’s only institutions solely focused on strengthening communities," she writes in an opinion article. Funding for nonprofits is especially critical as New York slowly recovers and inches back to "normalcy."

The CAMBA team at eight Cornerstone Community Centers had a successful face coverings distribution event on Saturday, June 6th, where they distributed more than 10,000 masks at the following centers: Albany, Boulevard, Brevoort, Howard, Pink, Penn Wortman, Stuyvesant Gardens, and Sheepshead Bay serving 2,045 families. A
big shout to Senior Program Manager Regina Mitchell-Kendle for coordinating this event, making sure the team had cleaning supplies, a clean/safe environment, and the resources necessary to make it happen. Joining CAMBA in partnership was the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) who donated the face masks.

Now more than ever is a good time to learn what you can about our health care professionals. Beacon Director Earl Whitfield had the idea to invite Obstetrics-Gynecology specialist Dr. Ayesha Turner (pictured) to discuss what it's like to be a doctor--both personally and professionally. Beacon Director Tamra Boodie joined Earl in facilitating the presentation. Dr. Turner, who works at Oswego Health Clinic, talked about how her work has shifted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and what her medical education journey entailed. She then fielded questions from mentors and mentees from the Youth Mentoring Initiative (YMI), ranging from "
Can a baby be born with COVID-19?"
to
"What was your experience like going to college to become a doctor?"
There were a total of 53 participants; 45 of them from YMI, which provides mentoring opportunities to middle and high school youth, which contributes to positive decision-making, and successful college and career choices. The YMI participants were from eight CAMBA locations: Albany, Howard, Pink Houses, Penn Wortman, Beacon 164, Beacon 166, Beacon 271, and Beacon 361.
"It was an amazing and educational experience for all attendees, including CAMBA staff, to hear from an essential worker who is at the front lines of this pandemic," says Hector Cuevas, Director of Program Operations.
