CAMPUS ADVISORY: Weather Update

Dear FVSU Community,

The university is actively monitoring the weather forecast for the coming days. According to Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA), winter weather conditions—including snow, sleet and freezing rain—are expected to impact the region starting Friday morning, with hazardous travel conditions potentially continuing throughout the weekend.

The National Weather Service and Peach County Emergency Management Agency have forecasted that Peach County could get a wintery mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain in the early morning hours on Friday morning. This event is predicted to be short lived as temperatures are expected to move above freezing by lunchtime Friday.

Peach County is on the edge of the line for any freezing precipitation, and this event will mostly be a rain event for us with possible 20 to 30 mph winds. Things may change before Friday morning.

The greatest risk for ice accumulations is anticipated in North Georgia, particularly along the I-85 and I-20 corridors. For those traveling from the north on Friday, please use extreme caution and evaluate road conditions before beginning your commute. Employees who feel it is unsafe to travel should contact their supervisor to discuss alternative arrangements.

We are taking the following steps to prepare our campus for potential icy conditions:

  • Salt will be applied to key areas around campus today.
  • If ice is found on the ground tomorrow, sand will be placed to enhance safety in affected areas.
  • Facilities teams will be on standby to address any additional concerns as conditions develop.

FVSU Campus Police and Safety will continue to monitor the weather for any updates from the National Weather Service and the Peach County EMA and provide updates as needed.

In the event of emergency circumstances requiring immediate action, a Rave Guardian Alert will be issued. Visit www.fvsu.edu/students/rave-guardian to learn how to ensure that your communication preferences with Rave Guardian are current.

As always, the safety of our students, faculty and staff remains the highest priority as we monitor this inclement weather event.
