Barley Mowat blogs: "The craft beer movement has brought us a slew of excellent beers and some entirely new styles, but virtually all these new beers are heavy, high alcohol numbers. I suspect this is an instinctive reflex away from the low alcohol light beers so favoured by the sh*t beer fans" Read more for Barley Mowat here! The Comox Valley Echo reports that Surgenor Brewing is up for sale: "The micro-brewery is being promoted as a going concern, and the current owners hope a major new investment in the business will lead to expansion..." | Russell head brewer Jack Bensley with his barrell-aged wheat wine |
Greetings!
On Saturday March 5th your CAMRA Vancouver executive took a trip to Russell Brewing. Head brewer Jack Bensley and President Andrew Harris were on hand to discuss what they've been working on at Russell, including their brewmaster series and their upcoming barrel-aged wheat wine (which is still a few months away). CAMRA Vancouver is excited to report that Jack will be expanding Russell's barrel-aging program over the coming year, and that he's already set to brew the second batch of his wheat wine.
In this newsletter two weeks ago we reported that there would be at least one cask event every day from Thursday, February 24th to Friday, March 4th. Over those nine days there was a staggering twelve casks tapped across the Lower Mainland, from Kitsilano to North Vancouver to Surrey. We would like to congratulate CAMRA Vancouver member Danny Seeton for attending every cask over those nine days. Danny has set a new local record for the most cask events attended over a consecutive set of days, and has shown that no matter where you live in Vancouver there is a cask event nearby.
At last year's Vancouver Home Brewing Awards Matt Anderson and Danny Seeton took the Best in Show award for their 'Rocket to Russia' bourbon oak-aged Imperial Stout, and as part of their award they've brewed a full 14000 litre batch of this beer with Yaletown Brewing brewmaster Iain Hill. After spending over a month and a half conditioning, Rocket to Russia will go on tap this Thursday at Yaletown Brewing. Matt, Danny, and Iain describe this 10.5% abv Imperial Stout as being very smooth with a distinctive American oak flavour reminiscent of new world red wines. Matt, Danny, and Iain will be on hand for the launch at this Thursday's cask event.
Lastly, There are still two tickets left for R&B Brewing's beer dinner at Chutney Villa on March 14th. R&B Brewing has prepared five special beers, three of which will be cask-conditioned, to pair with five courses of Chutney Villa's South Indian cuisine. Check out the menu online.

CAMRA Executive Update
Policy and Advocacy Group gets off to a big start
Over 40 enthusiastic CAMRA members gathered last night at the Alibi Room to discuss issues related to the CAMRA's core values. With representation from brewers, publicans, retail and wholesale trade as well as concerned consumers, topics from distributional, tied houses, taxation and home-brewing laws were discussed at length. Commitments were made to dig into specific issues. The ball is definitely moving. The next meeting is scheduled for April 5th. For more information about how you can get involved click here
