What's New in Cully

Exchange white elephant gifts and cookies with your neighbors in Cully

Please join the Cully Association of Neighbors for our December 2024 winter celebration. For the hybrid portion of the meeting, join on Zoom or in person at Grace Presbyterian Church (6025 NE Prescott St). To join the white elephant gift exchange, cookie exchange, and gift card drawing, join at Grace Presbyterian.

In the hybrid portion of the meeting, Jonathan Cruz from the Multnomah County Health Department will update us on the county's wood smoke curtailment program, which helps to reduce air pollution. Brendon Wright will present on community supported agriculture programs in our neighborhood. Then we'll wrap up the hybrid portion and start our annual winter celebration.

To participate in the white elephant gift exchange, please wrap and bring a used item from your household. Used items are preferred, but you may also bring an item you purchased for no more than $15. White elephant exchanges are just for fun, so your gift can be silly, funny, or impractical.

To participate in the cookie exchange, bring a batch of cookies to share with your neighbors and a container for bringing home the cookies you received.

Arrive at 6:00 pm for meet and greet with your neighbors and CAN board members. The official meeting starts at 6:30 pm. Winter celebration begins around 7:15 pm. We look forward to seeing you!

SOLVE Community Clean Up Update!!

We are thankful for the Cully volunteers who participated at the Killingsworth Community Care Cleanup on 11/23/2024. We had 34 awesome volunteers that picked up 400 pounds of trash, this is about the weight of two full-sized refrigerators!! Your dedication made a world of difference, and we couldn’t have done it without you!

The energy, teamwork, and positive vibes were infectious, and it’s so inspiring to see folks come together!

Community Updates

Do you have abandoned cars on your street?

We've heard from Cully neighbors that parking can be hard to find because of abandoned cars. If this is the case, be sure to report abandoned cars to the city.

Leaf Day is Back!

From November to December each year, Portland Bureau of Transportation’s (PBOT) Leaf Day service helps provide cleaner, safer streets, keep our storm drains clear, and ensure our intersections don’t flood.

PBOT instituted Leaf Day because the amount of leaves in our 53 Leaf Districts was simply too much for our regular street cleaning equipment.

Leaf Day pickup is FREE for residents in Leaf Districts. There is no need to opt in or out. Not sure if you're in a Leaf District? Look up your home or business address and find out!

New Community Events Application Launches

The Portland in the Streets team is excited to announce that Community Events will feature a new application starting December 4! While the application looks different, the information gathered and the requirements for hosting events in the street will largely remain the same. This new application helps streamline the internal process and will therefore make things easier for you.

New Towing Rules Began

Nov. 12: Vehicles Missing License Plate or VIN Subject to Tow.

Following recent changes to city code, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) parking enforcement will now order an automatic tow for any vehicle that does not have a visible vehicle identification number (VIN) and does not display at least one license plate.

Allowing for an automatic tow will help parking enforcement officers more quickly clear vehicles in violation of city code from the public right-of-way – including abandoned autos.

Advising Portland's New Government

Did you know the City of Portland has 87 advisory bodies? These advisory bodies are made up of Portlanders who volunteer their time and expertise to inform City projects, policies, and practices.

Civic Life houses the Advisory Bodies Program, which provides training and resources for advisory body members, ensures advisory bodies follow and uphold their rules and bylaws, and manages recruitment information for open positions.

The program is currently performing an inventory of the City’s advisory bodies to be able to provide the most up-to-date and accurate information to the new Engagement Officer and the 12 new City Councilors. The program is also testing a new process to make applying for an advisory body faster and easier.

To date in 2024, the Advisory Bodies Program has helped manage 399 applications to fill 110 vacant positions.

The most popular advisory bodies this year?

  • Bicycle Advisory Committee – 51 applications
  • Portland Advisory Committee on Housing – 38 applications
  • Golf Advisory Committee – 33 applications

Check out the list of open positions at the end of this newsletter to learn more and apply!

Preparing Your Trees for Winter

Large trees do a lot for the health of people and the environment. They reduce neighborhood temperatures, offer wildlife habitat, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and help mitigate the effects of climate change. Maintaining them is critical to keeping our communities healthy and our city beautiful.

That’s why Urban Forestry encourages property owners to get their trees professionally maintained, now, before winter weather begins. Certified Arborists can identify and address potential issues before it’s too late, protecting your trees and your property.
