Sacred Resistance responds to ICE raids; legal aid funds requested for 14 church members detained; prayer vigil cancelled

[The Episcopal News, Sunday, June 8, 2025] -- Sacred Resistance, the diocesan ministry for immigration justice, today released the following letter addressing Friday's ICE raids in which 14 church members are among detainees. The letter also requests funds for their legal defense. An interfaith prayer vigil, previously scheduled for this evening at Los Angeles City Hall, has been cancelled by organizers, citing an abundance of caution.

On Friday, Bishop John Harvey Taylor and Sacred Resistance leaders joined Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass in decrying the ICE raids that occurred at Southland workplaces. The Episcopal News will post additional reports as they become available.

From Sacred Resistance -- June 8, 2025

Dear EDLA Family,

On Friday, June 6, fourteen beloved members of our church family were unjustly detained as part of the raids that wreaked havoc and terror throughout Los Angeles communities, targeting working-class, immigrant families at work, school, and home. These actions, and the level of militarization involved, are unconscionable and we condemn them entirely.

The church members detained, as far as we know, have been quickly transferred to various detention centers in Southern California. While we gather more details about their whereabouts and condition, we are in desperate need of funds to ensure that we can secure rapid and adequate legal representation for all impacted. We ask that you make a donation to our Sacred Resistance Fund managed through St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Hollywood. You can make a donation via PayPal or Venmo @ststephenshollywood. ...

Now is the time when our call to Sacred Resistance becomes clear and necessary. We stand on the side of the loving and liberating Jesus who calls us to be justice-seekers and peacemakers in the face of state violence and oppression. Stay tuned and follow our social media channels for further action alerts.
