HEADLINES
The question of whether cannabis (marijuana and its derivatives) causes lung cancer has remained unresolved for more than 100 years. A study published in 2005 was titled "Cannabis and tobacco smoke are not equally carcinogenic", and in 2017, the U.S. Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine stated that "There is no statistical association between cannabis smoking and the incidence of lung cancer". There has been little epidemiological evidence of cannabis-associated lung cancer either. However, in a recent issue of Lung Cancer, a group of researchers suggested that among heavy cannabis smokers (defined as those with Cannabis Use Disorder) the risk of cancer is elevated. A story in Stat suggests that although alcohol is a major public health problem in the US, not enough people are paying attention. According to the latest provisional drug overdose counts, drug overdoses have declined, but some worry about changes in drug policies and even more, the apperance of powerful synthetic drugs on the street. Finally, a story in MedPage Today indicates that men with erectile dysfunction are more prone to multiple types of substance misuse, but why is the question.
RESEARCH AND NEW REPORTS
It has been repeatedly shown that ketamine treatment can help alleviate major depression. Now a paper in American Journal of Psychiatry indicates that buprenorphine treatment after ketamine can successfully address suicidal ideation. Also this week, a paper in Alcohol Reports Current Reviews takes a scoping look at alcohol use disorder in women, including its correlates, consequences, treatment and prevention. Finally, an original investigation published in JAMA Network Open takes a look at edible cannabis and pain, sleep, and mental health management in older adults.
