Now that it's August, we know many families are gearing up for a new school year. Changing from the more relaxed pace of summer to balancing the busy school routine can be hard for kids and caregivers, but with some planning and simple steps, this change can be easier and less stressful for everyone.

Four Ways to Prepare for a New School Year

  1. Slowly change sleep schedules. Start moving bedtime and wake-up times earlier by 15-30 minutes each day, a week or two before school starts. This will help kids get used to their school schedule more easily.
  2. Set up a quiet study area at home where your child can do their schoolwork. You can start to use it now, by doing a quiet project or reading a book together in the study space.
  3. Get your kids involved in back-to-school preparations. Taking them shopping for school supplies and letting them choose their backpacks or lunchboxes can make them excited and feel in control of the new school year.
  4. Most importantly, make sure your child feels comfortable talking about any worries they might have about going back to school. Talking openly can help them feel better and more confident as they start a new school year.

Do you or someone you know need support with back-to-school supplies ο»Ώand other resources?

Community events and fairs of all sizes are held across the metro to help with supplies, health screenings, and more. You can also check with your child's school district to see if they have a program to support their students.

The Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council is hosting their annual Back to School Backpack Giveaway on Saturday, August 10 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Nutter Ivanhoe Neighborhood Center. This is a first-come first-served event, so plan to arrive early.
