Ask Asphalt Man
Question: Are there benefits of paving thicker in cold weather?
Answer: Often times specifications will require thinner lifts to be placed (1.5") as the owner/specifier feels the compaction may be better achieved with thinner lifts. In cold weather conditions this may actually work against the contractor, and end result user.  << click to read more>>

Urban Highway Resurfacing - 2016
CDOT Region 5 and Elam Construction received the "Best in Colorado" Quality Asphalt Award in the Rural Highway Resurfacing Category for their SH145 North of Rico Project near Telluride. This $4.6M project consisted of 1" ST leveling coarse plus 1½" SX overlay for approximately 12 miles.  31,000 tons of material was placed over 125 working days. SH 145 is a two lane highway, in a narrow valley at an elevation of 8,000 to 10,000 feet approaching Lizard Head Pass. This project produced a variety of challenges ranging from weather and temperature concerns to the remoteness of the project in relation to material sources, hauling and communication. The project received near perfect scores in overall appearance, longitudinal joints and transverse  joints.  The Judges commented "excellent ride quality and joints are near perfect."    Accepting the award (L to R): Russ Larsen (Elam), Chad Saunders (Elam), Jim Cox (Elam), Brad McCracken (Elam), Tim Webb (CDOT).
