CAPA Welcomes 13 NEW Members in 2017
Thirteen new member organizations were welcomed into membership at our Annual New Member Luncheon on December 7.  With 252 members, CAPA is the largest state asphalt pavement association in the US.  The 13 new members are:    ADA Compliance by Whiteley Consulting, Purple Wave Auction, Clarence Richard Co Inc , Mountain Regional Equipment Solutions , City of , Fort Morgan, City of Littleton , City of Federal Heights, F & D International, LLC, Final Grade Professional Utility Adjusters , PaveSmartAll Colorado Semi Trailers, Vivid Engineering Group, C ivil Technology, Inc. Former NAPA Chairman Rick Moore was our guest speaker "The Future of Paving."  As part of our Annual New Member celebration we collected nearly $400 for the Food Bank of the Rockies. Thank you to all who donated, especially Earth Engineering and Award & Sign Connection! 

William Paul Rippy (May 3, 1926 - December 9, 2017)  Our deepest condolences to the Rippy family on the loss of your Dad and grandfather Paul. We mourn his loss but celebrate his life and the positive impact he had on those around him and the asphalt paving industry of Colorado. He will be greatly missed.  Paul was inducted into the Colorado Asphalt Hall of Fame in 2014. A memorial service will be held January 6, 2018. 

 

2018 NCAT Scholarship Recipients Announced  
Four local agency representatives and four consultant representatives have been selected for the 2018 APWA/CAPA/NCAT Asphalt Technology Scholarships.  Each one will be  traveling to Auburn, Alabama for the week long asphalt technology course on February 26 - March 2.  2018 NCAT Asphalt Scholarship Recipients Jacob Silverman - Earth Engineering Consultants;  Randy Walrath - City of Greeley;  Tom Gill - Town of Parker;  Dan DiCenso - AECOM;  Nicolas Stoker - City of Cortez;  Justin Cupich - Kumar and Associates;  Todd Rullo - City of Thornton;  Beau Radovich - Cesare Inc.
The Fall issue of the CAPA Magazine "The Road Ahead" has been published as an insert in the Winter issue of the Colorado Public Works Journal.  Some of the features in the new issue are Municipal Tax Measures for Roads, Local Agency Street Funding, In-Place Recycling, the City of Sheridan, and information about the 2017 APWA Project Awards.  Much thanks to the CPWJ. 
 


The CAPA 2018 "Roads of Colorado" Calendar is available and has been sent to all members companies. If you did not receive a calendar and would like one or more, stop by the office or  let us know and we would be happy to send you a few.   


CAPA Board of Directors Report:  The Board of Directors had a productive meeting on December 7.  Here are several of the highlights.

  • A 2017 Highlight Report was presented to the Board
  • Pete Borer, Major Accounts Representative, Wagner Equipment was elected as the new Equipment Supplier Representative.  Pete replaces Giles Poulson of Faris Machinery who completed a 4 year term.  Thank you Giles and welcome Pete!
  • Joe Lara, Vice President, Colorado Asphalt Services Inc. was elected as a new Producer Member.
  • The 2018-2019 Executive Committee are as follows:

LabCAT Certification   
The 2018 LabCAT Schedule is available and registration space for the first quarter is filling up fast. 
Check the LabCAT Section  the CAPA website to see the list of Certification session scheduled for 2018.

LabCAT Proctor of the Year announced. The 2017 LabCAT Proctor of the year is Paul Kinnes from CDOT Central Lab. Paul has worked for CDOT for nearly 48 years. He started as an Engineering Aide in 1970 and worked his way through the Department. He is currently an Engineer/Physical Science Technician II, and is assigned in the Flexible Pavement Unit at CDOT Headquarters Laboratory. Paul has been involved with the LabCAT Certification Program since its inception. He was part of a small group who helped to set up the LabCAT facility and create the curriculum for the program over 20 years ago. He has always been a point of contact for technical questions concerning testing procedures and processes. Paul has been a volunteer proctor during all  the years of the LabCAT program.

I-25 Gap Project - Update:  

The short list of project teams for the 18 mile I-25 Gap Project (Monument to Castle Rock) has been released. Interviews of the teams will take place on Thursday December 21 and an announcement of the final team, is expected on Friday, December 22, 2017.  The RFP includes approximately 600,000 tons of asphalt materials (HMA/SMA).  

CDOT Develops $4 Billion+ Project List for Potential Statewide Transportation Ballot Measure The focus of an abbreviated Transportation Commission Meeting was the discussion and development of a project list for a potential statewide transportation measure in 2018.   Workshop on Identification of Potential Ballot Projects for 2018

Awards Program Update: There were 51 projects nominated for the 2017 awards. Once the projects are all judged, the scores will be totaled and the winners notified. During this period of time CDOT will be gathering data for the Plant Production and Smoothness awards for 2017. All winners will be notified by no later than February 1, 2018.
