The Nelson Lecture is a gift from the late Constance Ruth Nelson Wise, a 1971 graduate of Capital’s Music Education program. While a student, her eyes were opened to the world, race relations, and other religions; consequently, she would like her annual speaker series to be very open and progressive, with guest speakers and thought leaders who support and embrace open dialogue and discussion.

In the midst of Alla Zagaykevych’s residency at Capital’s NOW Festival, professors Sergey Rybas, English, and Dina Lentsner, Music, along with musicologist Iryna Tukova, received word that an article they coauthored had been published in GESJ: Musicology and Cultural Science 2023.

“Rising Up with ‘Kalyna’: Examining the invitational rhetoric of ‘Ой у лузі червона калина’ as a social media response to the Russian war in Ukraine” examines how the song (translated “Oh, the red viburnum in the meadow”) became a symbol of the Ukrainian people’s resistance and unity following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In the summary of the article, the authors wrote: “When Ukrainian pop-musician Andriy Khlyvnyuk posted his performance of the song on Instagram, multiple social media platforms exploded with numerous mashup versions of the song, all manifesting a symbolic counterargument toward the war narrative of the attacker. Employing invitational rhetoric as our framework, we analyze three video products created within what we call the “Kalyna” movement, one featuring the original performance by Khlyvnyuk along with other Ukrainian celebrities, and two others that stem from Estonia and Georgia. We suggest that, rather than serving as a direct call to arms, the song’s renditions reflect the performers’ own negotiation of their national selfhood and thus enact support of a nation under assault by celebrating its history and its right to freedom.”

And the winner is …

Jeff Cisco, director of Student Accounts, took home the trophy for his winning bowl of “Chorizo Bandito” in the 2024 Faculty & Staff Chili Cook-Off! Second place went to Robert Fleming, Business and Finance, with “A Hint of Spice and Everything Nice,” and third place was won by Melissa Lung, President’s Office, for her “Cluckin’ Bean Extravaganza.” The cook-off is always held the Thursday before the Super Bowl, so start perfecting your own chili recipes for the 2025 competition!

Experience the Rich Culture of Scandanavian Music

You are invited to experience "Under the Northern Lights: An Evening of Scandinavian Masterpieces" with Dr. Caroline Bergan, soprano, and Michael Lester, piano, and featuring Diction Club Singers and Thomas Secrist on violin.

Thursday, March 14

6 p.m.

Mees Hall

“In an effort to promote underrepresented works and cultures, I welcome you to enjoy an evening of Scandinavian music,” said Bergan, assistant professor of Voice. “Having spent my childhood in Norway I have a deep connection to my Norwegian roots. Norway is known for its beautiful topography, with steep fjords and northern lights, as well as its promotion and support for the arts. It is also home of the Sámi people who inhabit the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, and whom have a rich culture of music all their own. It is my hope that the music will transport you on a journey from the pastures and valleys, where women would herd the cattle back home by cattle calls, to the long summer days filled with eternal sun, and short winter days covered in snow and northern lights.

The concert, which also will feature student artists, will be followed by a reception hosted by the Diction Club in Mees Lobby.
