After a year of restrictions imposed by the pandemic, we are excited to announce plans to return to in-person learning this fall at all three Capital University campuses.
The decision to take steps toward normalizing learning and living was made based on several factors, including: declining COVID-19 cases nationally, statewide, and in Franklin County; vaccine rollout; and conversations with students, faculty, staff, and the Franklin County Public Health commissioner.

MAY COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES
|
As May approaches, we all look forward to commencement and celebrating a new chapter in the lives of our Capital graduates from both the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021. While we had hoped to be able to hold traditional ceremonies, continued restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic demand that we think outside the box and provide a different tradition.
We currently are planning to celebrate Bexley campus undergraduates and graduate students from the Class of 2021 on Saturday, May 8, 2021, and the Class of 2020 on Sunday, May 9, 2021.
Graduates of both classes were emailed a survey on Friday, Feb. 19, to help determine the kind of ceremonies they would prefer. PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR SURVEY RESPONSE NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3.
If you are planning to graduate in May 2021 and did not receive a survey, please email Stacie Wickham.

MASCOT SURVEY DEADLINE MARCH 1
|
If you haven’t already done so, please take a minute to share your ideas about Capital’s new mascot. After careful deliberation and discussions spanning several months, a decision was made to retire our Crusader nickname. Our goal is to find a mascot that is a strong representation of this great institution. Through March 1, 2021, we invite you – students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members – to share your ideas so that together we can find a nickname that best represents who we are.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
|
The Schumacher Gallery exhibit “Danny Lyon: Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement” will be on display through March 27 (except during spring break when the Gallery is closed).
Danny Lyon helped define a mode of photojournalism in which the photographer is deeply and personally embedded in the subject matter that they are capturing. Lyon began his photographic career in the early 1960s as the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a national group of college students who joined after the first sit-in by four Black college students at a North Carolina lunch counter.
From 1963 to 1964, he traveled the South and Mid-Atlantic regions documenting the Civil Rights movement. These images capture life as it was – from prohibiting Blacks from activities, to requiring separate building entrances and water fountains, to sit-ins and protests – and the reactions that resulted.
The exhibit is free and open to the public. Located on the fourth floor of Capital University’s Blackmore Library, the Schumacher Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 12-3 p.m., and Saturday, 1-5 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS INTO FINAL WEEK OF THE REGULAR SEASON, 4-4
Over the last two weeks the Women’s Basketball team experienced both being swept and sweeping its opponent in a pair of weekend sets. Against Baldwin Wallace, the Crusaders’ offense sputtered in 54-47 and 75-49 losses to Baldwin Wallace on Feb. 12-13. Capital did an about-face last weekend against Ohio Northern University by winning both contests against a tough Polar Bear squad. CU defeated ONU on its home floor, 48-45, and then completed the sweep behind Kaylee Cyphers’ first career double-double in a 61-54 victory in Ada.
Cap will celebrate its seniors, Allison Roach and Caroline Taphorn, on Saturday, Feb. 27, following the game.
Capital is currently sixth in the OAC standings and has two games left to play to find where it will be seeded in the upcoming OAC Tournament. Should Capital win both games and Mount Union lose at least one game they could be seeded as high as fourth and earn a home playoff game.
MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON ENDS PREMATURELY
Things began clicking for Capital Men’s Basketball and freshman Carter Combs continued to churn out top performances on the offensive end. He scored 32 points in a pair of Capital wins over Baldwin Wallace on Feb. 12-13, lifting the Crusaders’ overall record to 4-4 overall.
Men’s hoops’ season came to an abrupt end prior to its weekend series against Ohio Northern when COVID-19 protocols were initiated within the team. The series against the Polar Bears was canceled and due to health and safety protocols in place, the team would not be eligible to play until March 5. Unfortunately, this takes Capital out of the running of the OAC Tournament, thus ending its season.
TRACK AND FIELD
Capital Track & Field has competed in two meets since our last update.
At the OAC Elite Meet, which was split into two locations (Capital and Otterbein), senior throw specialist Josh Miller highlighted the day with victories in the shot put and the weight throw. For a full recap of the OAC Elite Meet, click here.
Last week, Capital hosted its annual Rick Meindl Last Call event and invited Ohio Northern and Wilmington College to The Capital Center. Alexa Poling represented well on the women’s side with a pair of second-place finishes in the shot put and weight throws, while two on the men’s side came away with wins. Freshman Zion Park won the pole vault, his second win of the season, while sophomore Jonathan Brown sped his way to a victory in the 200-meter dash.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Capital Women’s Lacrosse had its season opener at the University of Mount Union canceled due to winter weather. The game will not be made up. The Crusaders open their season against rival Otterbein University on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. Fans are still not permitted in the stadium – but we’re told that you can stand outside the gate of Memorial Stadium if you’d like to cheer on the Purple and White!
MEN’S LACROSSE
Men’s Lacrosse will open its season this Saturday as well. Capital will head to Wilmington College for a 1 p.m. start against the Quakers from Williams Stadium. Full coverage of the event can be found online at athletics.capital.edu.
