Message from the CEO

On May 12th, 2026, the Care BC Board of Directors and I met to develop the organization’s strategic plan. In recognition of our changing environment, Care BC updated its vision and mission.

Our new vision is the North star by which we guide our work:

Communities in British Columbia where seniors, caregivers, and other people at risk of isolation are healthy, connected, and able to live with dignity.

Our renewed mission provides the pathways to continue to support our community:

To provide community-based health promotion and supportive care services that reduce isolation, strengthen resilience, and help people remain safely in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

For the Board and staff of Care BC, enhancing support for seniors and families requires a shared commitment to compassion, innovation, and community. As the needs of our aging population continue to grow and change, we have an opportunity to strengthen the services that help people live with dignity, independence, and connection.

The three areas of Care BC’s strategic focus are:

  • Enhance Meals on Wheels
  • Develop respite care
  • Support caregivers

Enhancing Meals on Wheels is about more than delivering nutritious food. It is about delivering peace of mind. Every meal represents “nutrition” for the body and for the soul. A meal delivered is a touchpoint that helps reduce isolation, promotes well-being, and allows our cherished clients to remain safely in their homes. By enhancing and modernizing our programs, we can ensure that no one is left behind and that every individual has access to the nourishment and support they need.

Equally important is the development of respite care services. Even the most devoted caregivers need time to rest, recharge, and attend to their own well-being. Accessible, flexible, and high-quality respite care can prevent burnout, improve outcomes for care recipients, and strengthen families. By expanding respite options, we acknowledge that caring for caregivers is an essential part of caring for our communities.

At the same time, we must recognize and invest in the incredible contributions of caregivers. Family members, friends, and dedicated professionals provide essential care every day, often balancing these responsibilities with their own work, health, and family obligations. Their commitment reflects extraordinary compassion, courage, and resilience. Supporting caregivers with community resources, and other supports is not only the right thing to do, but also a critical investment in the sustainability of our care system.

By enhancing Meals on Wheels, developing respite care and supporting caregivers, we co-create a continuity of care that serves seniors and other vulnerable individuals now and in the future. These initiatives reflect our shared values of integrity, excellence, and trustworthiness. They remind us that strong care and strong communities are built when we look after one another and ensure that every person, regardless of age or circumstance has the opportunity to thrive.

The future of care is not just about meeting needs; it is about creating hope, strengthening connections, and building communities where everyone feels supported. By working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of seniors, caregivers, and families for generations to come.

Meet the Team Behind Your Meals: An Interview with Blue Ivy Kitchen

As of Monday, June 1, 2026, Western and North Shore Meals on Wheels began partnering with Blue Ivy Kitchen as our new meal provider. This transition followed careful planning to ensure clients continue receiving nutritious meals every day.

To introduce our community to the team behind the meals, we spoke with Anthony, David, and Ming from Blue Ivy Kitchen about their passion for cooking, their commitment to quality, and the care that goes into every meal prepared for Meals on Wheels clients.

What inspired your team to partner with Care BC, and what does this partnership mean to you personally?

Anthony, David, and Ming shared that serving the community is at the heart of their work. While they are passionate about preparing high-quality meals, partnering with Care BC allows them to use their culinary expertise to support seniors who rely on nutritious, professionally prepared food. For them, cooking is not only a profession but also a meaningful way to care for others.

When developing meals for Meals on Wheels clients, what are the most important factors you consider to ensure seniors receive nutritious, delicious, and comforting meals?

The team explained that every meal begins with three priorities: food safety, nutrition, and flavour. They carefully select fresh, high-quality ingredients, with David personally visiting suppliers several times each week to choose produce and other ingredients. Meals are designed with seniors in mind by reducing salt, sugar, and spice while maintaining comforting flavours and balanced nutrition.

Many seniors rely on Meals on Wheels every week. What would you like them and their families to know about the quality, safety, and consistency of the meals prepared by Blue Ivy Kitchen?

Anthony, David, and Ming emphasized that quality and consistency are central to everything they do. They value feedback from both volunteers and clients, using comments and suggestions to continually improve their meals and service.

One client recently shared how meaningful the program has been during a difficult time:

"Meals on Wheels has been a godsend while I've had a broken ankle. It's such a wonderful program and the meals are delicious. I don't know what I would have done without their help."

Stories like this reflect the important role Meals on Wheels plays in helping people maintain their independence and receive support during times when preparing meals may be challenging.

Behind every meal is a careful process designed to maintain quality and safety. The Blue Ivy Kitchen team follows strict food safety procedures throughout the cooking and packaging process. Meals are packaged immediately after cooking using professional equipment to help maintain their quality and temperature. Heat packs are placed in delivery bags to help keep meals warm, and staff wear dedicated protective clothing and gloves during packaging. Every meal container is carefully inspected before it is sent out for delivery.

The team is grateful for the feedback they receive from clients and volunteers. One Care BC volunteer recently shared a client’s comment that the meals tasted better than typical hospital meals and were approaching restaurant quality. For the Blue Ivy Kitchen team, comments like these reinforce their commitment to providing seniors with meals they can enjoy with confidence.

David brings decades of culinary experience to Meals on Wheels. During his career, he worked at internationally recognized hotels, including the Shangri-La and Sheraton, preparing large-scale banquets. He also participated in preparing meals for distinguished guests, including former U.S. President George W. Bush and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Today, he finds the greatest satisfaction in using his experience to serve seniors in the community.

If you could share one message with seniors who are thinking about continuing—or joining—the Meals on Wheels program, what would you say?

The team hopes every client can see, smell, and taste the care that goes into each meal. Their goal is for every meal to feel like it was lovingly prepared by a family member. They believe that food is more than nourishment—it is also comfort, connection, and a way of showing care and respect for every client they serve.

Meals on Wheels is about more than delivering food—it also helps seniors remain independent at home. How do you hope the meals your team prepares contribute to their health, dignity, and quality of life?

Anthony, David, and Ming believe that their responsibility is to give every meal their full attention and effort. By focusing on safety, nutrition, variety, and quality, they hope their meals help seniors maintain their health, independence, and dignity while continuing to live comfortably at home for as long as possible.

The Paul Myers and Shore Family Respite Centre Nears Completion

Recently, we visited The Paul Myers and Shore Family Respite Centre on the North Shore (also known as the North Shore Family Respite Centre or NSFRC) to see how the space is coming together ahead of its eventual opening.

The construction is now complete, and the NSFRC is taking shape beautifully. Furniture and kitchen equipment are arriving, bringing warmth and functionality to the space. The team is also adding the finishing touches, including selecting and ordering artwork for the walls and completing minor repairs such as patching and painting small wall imperfections.

The NSFRC has been thoughtfully designed to meet a wide range of care needs. Several rooms are equipped to accommodate clients with higher support needs, including those requiring bariatric equipment. The NSFRC also features an accessible therapeutic bathing system that allows clients to enjoy a comfortable, full bath while remaining safely supported. These features help promote comfort, dignity, and independence for seniors who may have mobility limitations.

Outside, the garden has been carefully landscaped and planted, creating a welcoming outdoor space where guests can relax and enjoy nature. The planters intended for garden therapy are ready as well and await our clients and their loving care for plantings they will choose.

The preparation of the NSFRC continues with great anticipation. Our team continues to complete the remaining details needed to ensure a smooth opening, when the time comes. We look forward to supporting seniors and their caregivers through this new respite service in our community.

Please support Care BC. Your generous donations support our programs for seniors and caregivers. Your contribution can help our vulnerable residents and provide peace of mind to their caregivers.

Thank you for supporting Care in BC.

Thank you for supporting Caring British Columbians.

Care BC

(Respite Care)
(Caregivers)

Blue Ivy Kitchen

Blue Ivy Kitchen

Meals on Wheels
