What inspired your team to partner with Care BC, and what does this partnership mean to you personally?
Anthony, David, and Ming shared that serving the community is at the heart of their work. While they are passionate about preparing high-quality meals, partnering with Care BC allows them to use their culinary expertise to support seniors who rely on nutritious, professionally prepared food. For them, cooking is not only a profession but also a meaningful way to care for others.
When developing meals for Meals on Wheels clients, what are the most important factors you consider to ensure seniors receive nutritious, delicious, and comforting meals?
The team explained that every meal begins with three priorities: food safety, nutrition, and flavour. They carefully select fresh, high-quality ingredients, with David personally visiting suppliers several times each week to choose produce and other ingredients. Meals are designed with seniors in mind by reducing salt, sugar, and spice while maintaining comforting flavours and balanced nutrition.
Many seniors rely on Meals on Wheels every week. What would you like them and their families to know about the quality, safety, and consistency of the meals prepared by Blue Ivy Kitchen?
Anthony, David, and Ming emphasized that quality and consistency are central to everything they do. They value feedback from both volunteers and clients, using comments and suggestions to continually improve their meals and service.
One client recently shared how meaningful the program has been during a difficult time:
"Meals on Wheels has been a godsend while I've had a broken ankle. It's such a wonderful program and the meals are delicious. I don't know what I would have done without their help."
Stories like this reflect the important role Meals on Wheels plays in helping people maintain their independence and receive support during times when preparing meals may be challenging.
Behind every meal is a careful process designed to maintain quality and safety. The Blue Ivy Kitchen team follows strict food safety procedures throughout the cooking and packaging process. Meals are packaged immediately after cooking using professional equipment to help maintain their quality and temperature. Heat packs are placed in delivery bags to help keep meals warm, and staff wear dedicated protective clothing and gloves during packaging. Every meal container is carefully inspected before it is sent out for delivery.
The team is grateful for the feedback they receive from clients and volunteers. One Care BC volunteer recently shared a client’s comment that the meals tasted better than typical hospital meals and were approaching restaurant quality. For the Blue Ivy Kitchen team, comments like these reinforce their commitment to providing seniors with meals they can enjoy with confidence.
David brings decades of culinary experience to Meals on Wheels. During his career, he worked at internationally recognized hotels, including the Shangri-La and Sheraton, preparing large-scale banquets. He also participated in preparing meals for distinguished guests, including former U.S. President George W. Bush and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Today, he finds the greatest satisfaction in using his experience to serve seniors in the community.
If you could share one message with seniors who are thinking about continuing—or joining—the Meals on Wheels program, what would you say?
The team hopes every client can see, smell, and taste the care that goes into each meal. Their goal is for every meal to feel like it was lovingly prepared by a family member. They believe that food is more than nourishment—it is also comfort, connection, and a way of showing care and respect for every client they serve.
Meals on Wheels is about more than delivering food—it also helps seniors remain independent at home. How do you hope the meals your team prepares contribute to their health, dignity, and quality of life?
Anthony, David, and Ming believe that their responsibility is to give every meal their full attention and effort. By focusing on safety, nutrition, variety, and quality, they hope their meals help seniors maintain their health, independence, and dignity while continuing to live comfortably at home for as long as possible.
