For those who have read, How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America (2021) by Clint Smith, he currently has out a book of poetry. Above Ground (2023). “is about the expansiveness of fatherhood. It is tender, loving, and joyous. Smith marvels as his children discover the world for the first time — and marvels at the beauty of discovering it again as a parent”, shondaland.com.
From goodreads.com: “There are poems that meditate on what it means to raise a family in a world filled with constant social and political tumult. Above Ground wrestles with how we hold wonder and despair in the same hands, how we carry intimate moments of joy and a collective sense of mourning in the same body. Smith’s lyrical, narrative poems bring the reader on a journey not only through the early years of his children’s lives, but through the changing world in which they are growing up—through the changing world of which we are all a part.”
Smith, who has a Ph.D. from Harvard and is a staff writer for The Atlantic, also has an enlightening series on YouTube called Crash Course Black American History. In 51 episodes approximately 10 minutes long, he covers the history of Black Americans from slavery to the Black Lives Matter movement.
