CARTA holds the Academic, Professional, and Administration Staff (APAS) Workshop and the APAS ToT Workshop at Makerere |
From August 12 to 16, CARTA, in collaboration with Makerere University, conducted a research capacity-strengthening intervention for Academic, Professional, and Administrative Staff (APAS). The event brought together 57 participants and 14 facilitators from all CARTA African partners to discuss and train on best practices for research support and improving their institutions' research systems, processes, and policies.
The opening ceremony featured remarks from APHRC’s Director of Operations and Deputy Executive Director, Joseph Gichuru, the Dean of the School of Public Health at Makerere University, Prof. Rhoda Wanyenze, and the Head of the Research and Related Capacity Strengthening Division at APHRC and CARTA Program Manager, Florah Karimi. They emphasized the vital role of all staff in supporting research at institutions. The event included two workshops: a general APAS workshop from August 12 to 14 and an APAS Trainer of Trainers (ToT) workshop from August 12 to 16. The ToT workshop aimed to ensure that the APAS intervention becomes routine at every CARTA partner institution, consistently enhancing research support processes.

CARTA/ARUA Institutions to Lead New ARUA Strategic Collaborative PhD Programs | |
The University of Nairobi, Makerere University, and the University of the Witwatersrand will be leading some of the new collaborative PhD programs recently approved by ARUA. The strategic move announced through University World News in March by the former ARUA Secretary General Ernest Aryeetey aims at graduating 7000 PhDs in the next 10 years. This initiative is very close to CARTA’s core, and we wish our partners all the best in this endeavor. The Consortium remains open to collaboration in this and other initiatives to strengthen postgraduate training in the continent. Our digitized curricula materials are published with a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial License. Our consortium is ready to run ToTs for faculty and staff in partner and non-partner institutions who may benefit from the CARTA interventions.
ARUA has also launched the 3rd ARUA Research profiles report, which adds the profiles of our partners OAU and KUHeS to those previously described.
