Description
The purpose of this research is to examine the use of cement for stem fixation in hemiarthroplasty and THA for intracapsular hip fractures. Orthopaedic Associations worldwide have produced standard guidelines for best practice supporting early definitive surgery and the use of cemented stems.
The adoption of these guidelines is inconsistent across many parts of the world, some of which are related to historical variations in practice. In Scandinavia and the UK, it is routine practice for surgeons to use cemented stems for hip replacements. In other countries, including the United States and Canada, the use of cement is far less common.
The aim of this study is to ascertain the barriers that prevent Canadian surgeons from using cement in hip fracture procedures. Understanding these influences may help to increase compliance with national and international guidelines on best practices for hip fracture fixation.
