Dear UDC Community,

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) invites you to join us for the next CAS Reads Big event on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. This event will feature distinguished author and UDC alumus, David Nicholson, who will be presenting his latest book, "The Garretts of Columbia: A Black South Carolina Family from Slavery to the Dawn of Integration." This multigenerational non-fiction story explores hope and resilience, offering a profound perspective on the American history of Black struggle, sacrifice and achievement.

Mr. Nicholson's research shared in this book is beautifully written and examines the richness of his own family history. Already an accomplished author, Mr. Nicholson's storytelling is enriched by his background, which adds depth to the narrative. "The Garretts of Columbia" has received outstanding reviews since its recent release.

"The best story is a personal story. David Nicholson tells a personal story about his family in 'The Garretts of Columbia.' Pride, shame and curiosity create an open, revealing book. His skilled writing takes his people from the slave trade to the Great Migration. Here's a personal story that is his story - History." - Juan Williams, author of "Eyes on the Prize: America's Civil Rights Years 1954-1965."

We encourage and welcome all students, faculty, staff and members of our community to join us for this enriching and engaging literary event, and to connect with the author and esteemed UDC alumus!

After the presentation, Mr. Nicholson will host a book signing session, and copies of the book will be available for purchase. David Nicholson is a former editor and book reviewer for the Washington Post Book World and author of "Flying Home: Seven Stories of the Secret City." He attended Haverford College before graduating from the University of the District of Columbia. Nicholson has worked as a reporter in San Francisco, Milwaukee and Dayton, Ohio. He lives in Vienna, Virginia, with his wife and son.

Refreshments will be provided. For more information contact Kemmell Stewart at [email protected].
