May is Foster Care Awareness Month
In Santa Clara County, there are approximately 1,500 children in the dependency system who have suffered significant trauma due to abuse or neglect.

Each one of these children deserves love, care, a permanent home and the opportunity to thrive.

May is commemorated as Foster Care Awareness month to shine a light on all the children who are in the foster care system through no fault of their own and the community that supports them.
Child Advocates' Retiring Executive Director profiled in the Los Altos Town Crier
Retiring Executive Director Karen Scussel doesn’t have children of her own, but she's often thought of as a "mom" in the eyes of the 17 foster youth she's served over an 18 year span. This year, at Child Advocates' Spring Gala, Karen was honored as a "Hero and Legend" for her work in the community.

“I enjoy children, I enjoy helping people do things they didn’t think were possible,”says Karen.

Karen's work as a CASA and as Child Advocates' Executive Director was recently highlighted in the Los Altos Town Crier.

Foster Youth Hit Sharks' Ice for Afternoon Fun
Ice skating is a sport that not all children have the opportunity to experience, particularly those in foster care. However, earlier this month 45 foster children laced up their skates at the Sharks ice arena for an afternoon of healthy activity and fun.

Child Advocates' student intern Iliana Plascencia was there to take in the sights and sounds.
3rd Annual Flower Run Raises Funds for Foster Youth
The 3rd Annual Flower Walk/Run for Foster Youth was a big success bringing in more than $14,000 with over 250 participants.
