Letter from the CEO

School's Out For Summer

When children are in school, there are extra eyes and ears keeping up with their lives as their teachers see them every day. A teacher is often the one who notices changes and is a trusted person a child can open up to when they do not feel safe in their home.

In 2022 there were nearly 50,000 reports of abuse made to Texas Child Protective Services by teachers. That is 50,000 children whose abuse might have gone unnoticed if it wasn't for their teacher.

But when school is out for the summer, teachers don't see the children daily. During these summer months, it's especially important for concerned community members to report suspected child abuse to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services at www.txabusehotline.org or by calling 1-800-252-5400.

Our CASA volunteers will not let the summer go by without checking to make sure the children are safe and have someone they can confide in. Keep the children on your mind and in your hearts as you enjoy this summertime, and remember that the children in our community are also the future of our community.

Learning Through CASA

Read more about Taylor

To complete her degree in Sociology with a focus on Criminal Justice from Texas Lutheran University, Taylor Brennan is completing a 235-hour internship with CASA of Central Texas.

“I chose CASA for my internship because as a sociology major, one focus is on how everyone’s unique and individual experiences are what make them who they are. I had heard of CASA, and I liked that the goal is reunification of families, that it is volunteer-based, and nonprofit. Based on what I have learned about myself, my community and those around me, I thought CASA would be a great fit. It aligns well with my degree and who I am as a person!”

Touring the Community

To familiarize our volunteers with available resources in the community, we went on a "For our Families" tour around Comal County in June.

We talked with staff and received tours at Connections Individual and Family Services, the Children's Advocacy Center of Comal County, Inc., and the New Braunfels Food Bank.

Advocates, check your email for details on the Hays County tour!
