June is Pride Month, a time dedicated to honoring and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. As an organization committed to advocating for the well-being and rights of all children, CASA Lake County understands the importance of creating inclusive and affirming environments where every parent, caregiver, and child feels valued and loved for who they are.
Youth and young adults who identify as LGBTQ+ are disproportionately represented in the foster care system. 30% percent of youth in foster care identify as LGBTQ+ compared to 11% in the broader population. On top of the trauma that comes with being separated from their family of origin, youth in foster care that identify as LGBTQ+ face additional challenges, such as higher rates of homelessness and discrimination, which can impact their overall well-being.
We encourage CASA volunteers, staff, and supporters to educate themselves about LGBTQ+ issues issues facing our CASA families and to stand up against discrimination and prejudice. By promoting understanding and empathy, CASA Lake County hopes to contribute to a society where all youth, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can thrive and reach their full potential.
With Gratitude,
