CASN and CINA to revise cultural safety competencies
The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) is collaborating with Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association (CINA) to revise cultural safety competencies published in the 2009 Cultural Safety and Cultural Competence for Nursing Education framework.
With guidance from an Advisory Committee, CINA and CASN will conduct an environmental scan to gather current references to inform the update. Virtual consultation forums will be used to gather feedback on the revised competency statements that detail the knowledge, skills, and attitudes in cultural humility and cultural safety that nurses must possess upon completion of their nursing program.
If you are interested in learning more about this project, please reach out to Lois Ifekwe at lifekwe@casn.ca.

As Canada’s non-profit resource for newly graduated nurse resources, the coming promise of spring is always a welcomed season. Senior nursing students are often emerging from their studies into practice consolidation and academic graduation. Along with these wonderful achievements comes the stages of professional role transition. This period is known to be distressing for many, as both a significant time of learning and adjusting occurs. Despite the best preparatory efforts of educators, graduates often feel blindsided and unprepared for the multiple shifting realities of transitioning to independent practice amidst new locations, coworkers, and responsibilities. Evidence continues to indicate that unpreparedness for the role transition can leave many assuming that they are alone in their experience, and additionally falsely leads them to believe they are inadequate. Introducing students to the concepts of professional role transition, such as through Duchscher’s Stages of Transition is of benefit, but graduates typically need both reminding of these stages, and where they can find responsive support during their transition period.
For educators, new graduate supporters and nursing leaders, we would like to remind readers of the free and extensive supports and content dedicated to newly graduated nurses found at www.nursingthefuture.ca Subscribers can join, reach out, and gain significant benefit through evidence-based strategies and popular live sessions such as upcoming Anglophone NCLEX support!
