Training Program for Optimized Vaccine Communication
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine hesitancy is at an all-time high and trusted voices such as health care providers (HCPs) have an important role to play. To help HCPs develop their communication skills and effectively address vaccine hesitancy, a diverse team of nurses, pharmacists, physicians, and vaccine experts have developed three virtual simulation games where healthcare providers and healthcare trainees can practice their communication skills and learn how to respond to common misconceptions and concerns about vaccines through interactive scenarios. Those who complete the virtual simulation games will be able to practice their skills using open-ended questions, reflective listening, motivational interviewing, and other techniques to help patients explore their reasons for vaccine hesitancy and ultimately make an informed decision.
One of the games specifically supports healthcare providers to process their own emotions following difficult conversations. It is natural—even expected—for those working with people to experience a variety of emotions. The fast pace of health care often leads us to compartmentalize: to put our reactions aside and manage them later. The strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating this challenge, with health care workers in all disciplines and health institutions facing unprecedented emotional demands. The impact of ongoing stress and distress leads to compassion fatigue, increases rates of burnout, and can result in a desire to leave the field.
All three virtual simulation games were developed by healthcare professionals with expertise in vaccine hesitancy and communication. They are designed to help providers feel more confident and prepared to address vaccine hesitancy with their patients.
If you're a healthcare provider looking to improve your communication skills and effectively address vaccine hesitancy, be sure to check out these three virtual simulation games. You can access these games at https://can-sim.ca/vaccine-hesitancy/.

Vaccine Hesitancy Simulation Education & Resources
With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care practitioners (HCPs) and their support staff are receiving a tremendous amount of information, however, they may not have the time or expertise to be able to transfer this information into their clinical practice. Currently, the issue is not that there is a lack of information for COVID-19 vaccination, it is that the information is in several places, and may or may not be evidence-informed. In collaboration with the Manitoba Health Care Professional Associations Coalition (MPAC) and University of Manitoba faculty, virtual simulation experiences (VSE) were co-created with HCPs including community health representatives (CHR) as a vehicle to apply vaccine hesitancy knowledge. The VSEs were developed to build capacity among HCPs and CHRs as community vaccinators and vaccination promoters regardless of the geographical locations. This project targeted evidence-informed education on vaccine hesitancy or resistance among the rural and remote populations to apply knowledge via VSEs co-created with community stakeholders as the experts for vaccine hesitancy or resistance in living and working in these communities. This vaccination promotion project included VSEs that are targeted to MPAC professional groups such as athletic therapists, chiropractors, SpiritRX and Manitoba First Nations Tribal councils community health representatives, dental hygienists, dentists, denturists, licensed practical nurses, nurse practitioners, massage therapist, midwives, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychiatric registered nurses, psychological associate, psychologist, registered nurses , and social workers to address emerging health priorities. The VSEs and vaccine hesitancy resources can be accessed at https://nursepractitioner.ca/education/vaccine-hesitancy/
