At Toronto Metropolitan University, a team of 12 educators with 6 students co-curated an open educational resource (OER) An Introduction to Anti-Racism for the Nursing Professional: A Focus on Anti-Black Racism.” Designed for undergraduate nursing students at the introductory level, the OER is a unique contribution to nursing education as the content focuses on Anti-Black racism in the Canadian context.

Built on four pillars of awareness, empathy, relational, and advocacy, the resource formulates these principles into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on providing a context to racism, anti-Black racism, the link between racism and intersectionality, and racism, health, and healthcare. The second chapter focuses on what it means to be Black with a panel of Black educators, practitioners, and nursing students who share their experiences. The third chapter focuses on Black nurses’ invisibility, highlighting Black, Indigenous, Asian, and racialized nurse leaders. The final chapter focuses on anti-racism and nursing communication with a powerful and haunting spoken word film about “The Power of Words.”

The OER has received a glowing report from faculty and a Youth Advisory Committee of nursing students highlighting its relevance and impact. Its content includes stories, videos, and activities that engage and promote class discussion and inclusivity. Students have shared how it improved their competency and we recommend that you read it and include it in your course as a way of improving student and educator competency when promoting nursing collegiality and patient care in the context of anti-Black racism and anti-racism.

Call for Papers: Special Issue on Anti-Racism, Health, and Nursing

This special issue invites papers that can contribute to our understanding of the role of racism in nursing and health in Canada as well as solutions to tackle racism in healthcare and the nursing profession. We seek papers using diverse methodological and theoretical approaches, including intersectionality, critical race theory, and postcolonial and feminist perspectives. We also seek articles that provide concrete evidence-based strategies on how to address racism in health and nursing policy, practice, education, research, and administration. Possible broad topics include: curriculum innovations to address racism; qualitative inquiry into the experience of racism; insight into anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Muslim, and/or anti-Asian racism; leadership attainment of Indigenous, Black, and racialized nurses; strategies to advance anti-racist healthcare; disaggregated race-based data to shed light on health outcomes; critical perspective on racism and health; methods on the collection of race and ethnicity based data; the intersecting role of racism with other health determinants such as immigration and income inequality; etc. This is not an exhaustive list of possible articles. We especially seek articles that go beyond prevailing discussion and thoughts on race and add to our depth of understanding on the role of racism in healthcare and in nursing.

Submission Deadline: October 31, 2023

Publication Date: June 2024 (Accepted manuscripts maybe published online first ahead of print)

Guest Editors: Bukola Salami, RN, PhD; Josephine Pui-Hing Wong, RN, PhD
